How can you tell if you use 3g or wifi?

If you put all your chargable data access in the non-preferred group you will have connect manually to setup the connection and be charged. I have all my Wifi in the preferred group (at home and work and out in bars etc where there is free wifi) and GPRS, WAP etc in the group that is not preferred... that way you are incontrol of your bills.

Control Panel -> Connections -> Internet Accounts.
