FYI: Current State-of-the-Art on Geotagged Shared Photos

I was mucking about with the Location Tagger, which is still a beta standalone, available at http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/locationtagger. I was disappointed that it was not included in the v21 update for the N95, but there you go. I've posted the results to Panoramio, Flickr, and PicasaWeb. Of these, unfortunately, only Flickr has one-touch posting using ShareOnline, which is a shame because the results are the least impressive. And as far as I can tell, OviShare isn't doing anything with geotags at the moment.

The results are viewable at:

http://picasaweb.google.com/Neil264/GannetsAssistingWithGeotaggingTest/
(select "view map"😉
http://www.flickr.com/photos/neilhoskins/2370341483/map/
http://www.panoramio.com/user/1570149
(select "on the map" or "on Google Earth" if you have it installed.

Wish list:

  • one-button uploads using ShareOnline to Panoramio and Picasa.
  • Geotag-awareness on OviShare
  • Better maps on Flickr

Hey that's great. I've got the program but I haven't used it yet.

Question: Does your N95 have to be open for it to work, or can it pick up an okay enough signal while the phone is closed?

honestly mine works when closed a lot. even indoors. it seems like location tagger doesnt need quite as solid as a lock or something. but mine has definitely worked closed. though i try to open it more often than not.

That might be OK then. That's why I haven't used the app, because I'd have to open the app, let it get a lock, then take the photo with the phone open... which is all in all a bit of a faff. Is this why peeps are waiting for it to be included in the firmware?

That's true now you come to mention it: it's no use for spur-of-the-moment photos. There's an option to autostart, but I figured that would just run down the battery so haven't been using it. I guess that when it's part of firmware there will be an option to start when the camera starts.

Im pretty sure what autostart does, is look for a GPS signal when the phone is first turned on, then after not taking a photo for X amount of time, gives shuts off.

Its reactivated by opening the camera again. though stays on till the time out for taking a picture.

Not ideal, thats for sure. Presumably, it will activate/deactivate with the camera in future versions.

I think I'll give it a try with a couple of shots when I'm in town today.

Before I do, here's something you may not hear someone say about the geotagging feature:

Yeah I've tried it a couple of times. I'd show you them but I can't remember where I took the photos.

I know, I'm sorry. I just got up.

i just want it in the firmware to be cleaner. i run location tagger in the background always. when i go to take pictures, there is no waiting for a GPS lock. it just happens right away for me. and if you DONT have a gps lock in the first 30 seconds, the app waits till it gets a lock then tags the photo anyway, even if you have already exited the camera app. its very non-intrusive. why not just try it for free?
