phone doesn't recognize alot of phone numbers

Hey everyone,
Thanks ahead of time for your help. i have a really frustrating problem.
I have an N95 with product code 0551989 (It is the China version). I have more than 200 contacts in my phone and since i use it in the US, i have alot of phone numbers that start with 1 (because thats how they show up when someone calls you) but when you get a text message it doesnt have the 1 before the phone number. the problem is that now if my contacts are saved with the 1, then the name will only show up when i get a call but if i get a text message from the same person, the name won't show. I tried doing it the other way, if i save it without the 1, then it only shows up for text messages, but when they call there is no name. I really really dont want to go through every contact and save both verisons of the phone number under each name. does anyone have any reccomendations?

Thanks alot for your help guys.

P.S. my old E65 had the exact same phone numbers and it recognized all the phone numbers perfectly.
P.P.S its not only the "1" that has the problem, if i put any area code in front of the phone number, it gets confused. i.e. if the phone number is not EXACTLY the same as the saved entry it won't recognize it.

I realize this is a weird problem to have and as such there is probably no simple solution, but if anyone has any ideas, i think they'd be really helpful.

its well known that with an s60 phone, if the name does not show on the screen, then you have duplicate entries in your phone book and sim card. you must clean both these up, removing any place where the same number is listed more than once. this will absolutely fix your problem. remember to check the sim card too.

thanks for the comment man, but there are no duplicate phone numbers. i am sure. its just that it won't recognize the numbers if the first few digits are different. any ideas?

ok i re-read your initial post. do you have conversation installed by any chance? this app does the same thing to my text message inbox. so right now my inbox only shows the number on some people, not that name, though all are in my phone book. its because of conversation. however all my calls always show the person's name everytime. now since you are international, i'm not sure. i would definitely use a computer and add the +1 or whatever country code to each and every contact. if that's not what's going on, then i'm still confused.

nah, its not because on conversation. I have conversation and have all names appearing with images if they have them, rather than numbers.

There were some issues with receiving sms from an international destination that the sender ID isnt displayed to match your directory but I thought these were sorted? SMS come thru as you probably know as +countrycode.

I have US contacts SMS me sometimes, and it shows up... and I have only +1xxxxxxx too...

the name error happens back in the messaging inbox, not in conversation. but its caused by conversation being installed. all my phone's behave this way, and because i only use conversation, i dont care.

thanks guys. but i don't use or have conversation installed on my phone. the thing is, if for example i save the number with the +1, then when i get an sms, it will recognize the number and show the name instead. but when that person calls me, it doesn't show the name. if i take away the +1 then the name will show when the person calls, but not in the inbox...
on my old phone though, it would show the name either way. its really really annoying...

Oh sorry Roger, misunderstood your point. The only place I loose the text is in the inbox listing in TTSMS, but as I like youuse covnersation all the time its never an issue.

samanfarid, I understand the issue... lack of consistency in the phone translating your incoming caller id. Not got a suggestion for you at the moment...

*although maybe you could install converstaion!* 😉

Does it work in sms/call if you save 1 number +1 and 1 number without? As a test? Have you tried addin 001 instead??

I have the same problem, did you ever sort this problem out. I just bought a n95-4 model and I belive it's the korean 8gb model. How can I fix my sms problem?

Hi, can you tell me if you got this issue resolved? My Nokia N81 purchased in China has the EXACT same problem...

It's not connected to the chineese versions only. I have the same problem on my norwegian N95-1.
Problem is that it don't seem to be a pattern if the sms is sent with or without the country code - which is +47 in Norway....
