Hi
I have just got hold of a N95 which was on O2 before it was unlocked. At present it has firmware ver.12.0.01. I'd like to upgrade to at least ver.20 or ver.21. What I'd like to know is do I need to debrand before I upgrade the firmware or am I OK using my O2 product code and simply overwriting the present firmware with the latest? To be honest I don't find O2 that obtrusive like Orange or Voda, for example.
Or will I be missing certain functions or advantages if I don't use a 'vanilla' product code instead of the present O2 one?
Hope you understand what I'm asking 😊
Thanks in advance,
Naith
Every phone I've gotten with o2's firmware on doesn't seem to take anything out of the original firmware, and only add an o2 theme and screensaver, or maybe include an o2 active app (which can be uninstalled). What I've found best about each o2 phone though is that they came unlocked by default. I don't know if this is applicable to all o2 phones in general or I've just been lucky, but my 7650, N70 and N95 were all originally from o2 and they've all come unlocked.
I think the only benefit you'll get from debranding is the ability to get the newest firmware sooner, since phone providers always take a while to add their flair to the new firmware before releasing it. I know for certain though that if you debrand to, say, the EURO1 code you can only get v21. I don't know what o2's newest firmware is now so if their newest one is v12 then you might be better off debranding anyway. You can check this by just checking with NSU. You can do that without actually installing the firmware.
Thanks for the reply.
So does that mean I can simply upgrade the firmware WITHOUT having to debrand? (want to make sure!)
Thanks

You'll have to try it without debranding as who knows what the latest O2 firmware is. Use NSU, connect and see if it tells you there is an update available. If there is, then you don't need to debrand. If no updates available, it's up to you if you want to change your product code.
Personally, I debrand and use the Euro1 code because I seem to have this compulsion to upgrade as soon as possible. I just can't help myself.
OK, thanks for that. I'll give it a shot tomorrow as I'm knackered now & ready for bed 😊

The advantage of emigrating to New Zealand. It's the middle of the day and I'm wide awake.
Good luck tomorrow.
A friend of mine just had a replacement N95 from O2 through his insurance with them (excess of 25 😮 even with the 7.50 a month rip off!), but anyway, it came with v21 pre-installed, so as far as i can see you probably wont need to debrand?
some-one correct me if im very wrong hehe
