How to get Garmin XT onto a N95 8GB ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hoping you clever people can help me.

I have just got the N95 8GB and one of the main reasons I got it was to use sat nav. I read up on the phone & various sat nav options first and garmin came up tops. I ordered Garmin Xt mobile as it said it was compatible with the n95.

It comes on an SD card and I then discovered my n95 8gb phone doesn't have an SD slot !!

Does anyone know how I could get the gramin software on the N95 8GB?

Is there a better sat nav software option for this phone ?

Thanks for your help

Ruth

Sounds like you have a possible solution but I'm too stupid to know how to go about it.

How do I transfer files to the memory root ?

I'd need to get an SD card reader but what do I do then ?

Thnks for your help..... : )

Yeah, get a USB card reader and (if required) a MicroSD adaptor.

Then in your n95, go to Connectivity/USB and select Data Transfer - whence (after connection to your PC) your N95's onboard memory will show up (after refreshing) in Win Explorer.

Hook up your card/reader.

Click on your memory card and select all files/folders.
Then just drag and drop the lot onto your N95's internal memory .

Done.

May take a while. Internal memory transfer speeds are slow.

Hey thanks for the guide Pheonix !

Will give it a try.

I'll post something back up here if I get it to work successfully so anyone else stuck with the same thing knows how to make it behave itself !

Cheers

Possibly, but dont count on it. Its never been advertised as compatible for the 8GB because of the lack of card slot.

Still, if its unopened I cant see any problem with wherever its been bought from taking it back.

Yes it must be locked to the card as my card reader can't read it.

I'm sure I've read reviews of people using Garmin on the N95 8GB - has anyone found a way to get it to work on this phone or should I just ask for a refund ?

If I need to try and get a refund - does anyone have any other sat nav software to recommend that does work with the phone and means I can use the built in GPS without incurring exta cost to use the sat nav ?

Thanks for your help

You can make it work on the 8GB, but you need to use various hacks, which for obvious reasons I cannot explain or give links to on this forum. But google is your friend.

However, if you want to go down the refund way, theres a few other options (that dont use data).

Route66 (version 8). I havent tried this enough yet, so cannot give a decent opinion on it. From what I already know, its got good enough instructions, nice graphics, and the interface is ok. It still has the bear left/right issue though.

Navigon. If you just want basic navigation, its very good. Brilliant instructions, and seems to have good routing. Cant have speed cameras or traffic though, or any custom POI.

Theres navicore, but I wouldnt really recommend that. And of course, nokia maps, but Im not keen on subsciption type packages.

Thanks for the advice.

Don't think I am techy enough to try to get it to work without an idiot's guide.

It's a real shame cos I really liked the look of it and the features based on reviews I've read ( including yours). it was one of the main reasons I chose the N95 - didn't realise by getting the new version with the 8gb of memory that everything else I wanted to go with it would not work.

I suppose I should end this whole techmare and chose something else that is compatible.

You'd think Garmin would release a version for the n95 8GB - why can't they make a version you download or buy on a dvd to load onto the mass memory ?

Thanks for everyone's input to this - I shall have to get over the fact that I just bought a load of stuff that doesn't work : (

i'm using garmin on my n95 8GB. its definitely possible, but you have to use the hack. i bought the software, so morally i dont mind as garmin is such a great gps app especially on the big screen. but you gotta go thru the process, which can be tricky.

It is possible to download the files from the garmin site and install it without being registered. You set the usb to data transfer and the 3 install files unpack to it.

If you send the card version back and install this way i'm sure you'll be able to get a code from them. Actually i'm sure they would give you a code if you rang them up and told them your problem.

It's things like this that make me lose sympathy about cracking slightly. If a crack makes it compatible with the 8Gb then Garmin really ought to be looking at a legit way of doing the same.
Of course, if you bought it, then cracking it to get in on your 8Gb is a victimless crime anyway as they have made the sale and, in fact, a sale they wouldn't otherwise have made
