hey everyone,
I am very interesting in buying a Nokia N95-3 (US), but I had a question about the wifi.
I am with AT&T
With my previous phone, the blackberry pearl 8120 (pearl 2 with wifi), there were only certain apps that allowed for a wifi connection.
What I am wondering is, will the wifi connection work with any application that uses internet? gmail, instant messenger apps, or google maps? I ask this because i currently do not own a data plan and I only plan on using the wifi at my house to access the internet.
SO if anyone can answer this question, it would be greatly appreciated 😎
To my knowledge the wifi applies to any application that can access the internet.
yup the n95 can use wifi for any application on the phone which uses data.

Can I also use it to transfer files to and from a computer on the LAN? I mean, with my N73, I have to use the Nokia cable or bluetooth, both which are painfully slow..
I know you can use the phone's built in Home Network app to make it available on a network and share music, videos and photos, but I've never looked into how they can then be transferred to a PC over the network this way. I don't see why not.
Tell you what, I'll look into it in a mo and let you know (unless someone beats me to it lol).
Thanks, that will be great!
I know there's some application called "SymSMB" that can do it, but if it's already built in, that would be perfect!
OK I've given it a go but I can't seem to get anywhere with it. I've opened up the "Home Media" app (check under Tools or one of it's sub-folders to open and configure it) and it appears as a Media Device under Network on Vista. However when I open it the PC opens WMP and doesn't do anything else. The Nokia N95 manual states that certain ports have to be opened (Page 127) so I just turned off my firewalls and it's still not doing anything.
I don't think I've been much help on this but it's a step in the right direction perhaps. Maybe someone else on here can elaborate further and get it to work.

Home media is for people like me who like mucking about streaming music around the house, and think it's so cool that they don't mind it also being flakey as hell. For copying files around, use SymSMB, which is extremely straightforward and doesn't cost much.
ok guys i really appreciate it!! yall answered my question to a T 😊 i know ill like the symSMB too..
I am using WiFi on N95 and have no problem at all with any application. However, the streaming facilities given by the mobile service provider, like the live TV channels by Telenor in Pakistan, would still need to be accessed via EDGE or GPRS.

Must admit, symSMB is brilliant. Was using it last night and being able to open up the N95 folder structure from within Explorer over wifi and move stuff around at decent speed (and PC folders from N95) is so refreshing. Recommended.
