noticed today my n95 8gb wont send a sms if over 1 message in length. Never had this problem before and it sends mms and sms up to 160 characters fine. It tries to send first time i can tell by the line that goes through the gprs symbol. Then after that it doesnt even attempt to just says failed. Anyone any ideas? Im on o2. Liam
unable to send text message 2 sms or more
anyone?
have you just updated it? do you have the correct gateways?
no i reinstalled a back up recently as the phone was going wrong. Maps wouldnt calculate a route and videos wouldnt open. Everything is working fine now again and i can send sms so long as not over 1 sms in length which is weird.
All settings correct and message centre number correct
Hmm are you sure the settings are correct? My phone doesn't show a GPRS symbol when sending texts, even ones that are over 160 characters in length, and I'm with O2 'n all.

what should the settings be - come to think of it this has happened to me too, failing the 1st time then going through the 2nd time
call O2 and get them to text the settings to you
Here are the settings I have. I'm on o2 Pay and Go so I don't know if o2 use the same settings for contract users as well. However it may help in finding out what the problem is:
Message Centre: O2 SCP1
Message centre number: +447802092035
Character encoding: Reduced support
Receive report: No (Since o2 don't support this. Use *0# at the beginning of your sms instead)
Message validity: 1 week
Message sent as: Text
Preferred connection: GSM/UMTS
Reply via same centre: No
Go to Messaging -> Options -> Settings -> Text message to find your settings. Hope this helps.
yeah 100% my settings are right. Ive never had any issue with these settings and ive been using them for years.
Understand what I am saying, it sends SMS fine so long as it is only upto 160 characters i.e 1 sms. If I try and send a message that uses 2 or 3 text messages it fails.
The GPRS symbol I refer to is just the double line on the top left of the screen to show GPRS is avialable, its not active but when the phone transmits or recieves a break line goes through it, same if a call starts to come through.
message centre- +447802000332
character encoding Full support
recieve report No
Message validility Maximum time
message sent as- Text
preffered connection
GSM/UMTS
Reply via same centre No
I can understand why your GPRS is showing then. You must have your Packet data set to "when available" so it'll always stay connected until you send/receive a text or phone call.
Can you quote on here the error message you get when you try to send a text that's over 160 chars? Normally when a text fails, you can get more details about the error.
just a red exclamtion mark and "sending message failed"
change your char encoding to reduced support and that will use the conversion when available.
Are you sending uk to uk or with any non standard characters?
reduced support makes no difference. As i said the settings I have I have been using for years and years.
It fails regardless of whom I sending to, UK to UK I am trying. Never had this issue before and not changed anything.
I think it is a problem in the phone itself with the software some kind of glitch.
I will see if it sorts itself when I upgrade to V20 firmware later today.
Definately not an issue with my settings or o2.
can you receive sms' over 160 characters??

yes I believe so. And mms work fine.
it works now after the update. Must have been a bug in the phone. Thats the thing with symbian phones they have a mind of their own sometimes.
but still got the other problems if someone can help please.
liam
this problem is now back now Ive restored content. Had to do hard reset again to get messaging to work.
Might have to try and get bits of restore form different back up files to solve it....?
weird.
must be a custom setting or an old setting frm o2, just restore everything and rebackup everything apart from system state and then hard reset the phone again.
what i had to do
I have never had the issue before so cant be an old back up setting from o2.
It is the symbian way, it has a mind of its own!!
I bet if I ask the guy that programs symbian he wouldnt be able to give me an answer!
its ok now.
Firmware update finally done now, taken just short of 2 days to get my phone back to how I want it after updating to firmware 20.
What was someone asking the other day is it all worth it? lol well at least I have auto update now.
Shake me in the next firmware?
