Casing the Nokia N82

In the latest of my semi-definitive (is such a term an oxymoron?)
series of case reviews, I look at solutions designed to carry and
protect the Nokia N82, from silicone sleeves to holsters to in-situ flips. If you own a case which you think performs better or have spotted something on the web that you think might fit the bill, please comment!

Read on in the full article.

Note that the N82's (and many other models also) camera cover slider uses a magnetic sensor to figure out when the cover is open (i.e. and when to launch the camera application) - this means that if you place the camera cover close to a magnetic clip on your casing, the phone will think the slider has been opened and activates the camera. This can easily cause significant battery drainage.

Especially the first one seems to have the magnetic catch very close to the camera switch if you put the phone in the "wrong" way..

Just something to keep in mind.

nice round up - thanks.

can you remove the belt clip from the first one?

I thought the Krussel Classic was a load of crud. As you can see from the pics in this article the power port is completely obscured making it useless, especially when the thing is so damn hard to zip together and apart.... I bought it after seeing the N73 version which was a much better fit all 'round. I used a silicone case for a bit (good apart from mine partially obscured the front camera & light sensor, and it kept getting dust inexplicably trapped underneath), the main benefit of the silicone case was that it made the joystick feel nice and firm, not as flaky as it normally feels. I ended up buying the Nokia CP-208 pouch for my N82 which I think is perfect. It's a nice looking leather puch, it's lovely and soft inside and it's held closed by elastic. You could even combine the silicone jacket & the cp-208 if you wished, but it's a bit of a tight squeeze.

i have bought both a clear crystal case (expansys) and a white silicone case (amazon) for my n82.

the crystal case is a snug and good fit, and you can still see your phone clearly. there are a few downsides though, the case does get scratched including the screen, so visibility is affected. furthermore, outside light reflects of the case so seeing what's on the screen can be difficult. if it rains and you happen to use the phone, water can wick under the case and reopening the cover to dry it out is tricky.

that's why i looked at the silicone case. it fits really well, the case feels tactile and it's thinness makes it easy to use all the keys. also, if using a white case, it complements the silver cover of the n82. the screen is not covered so it's clarity and brightness can be appreciated. only minor gripe i have is one of the speakers is partially covered by the case, but this was the same on the crystal case, i wonder if a prototype phone was used to spec the dimensions which subsequently altered on the production phone?

Does the back of the case detach completely ( not just from 1 end, but both ends) in the Krusell Classic ?
Please let me know asap, I am just 1 step short of buying this. Thanks!

A previous respondent asked whether the front (camera) flap this case opened at both ends. Answer: No it does not, probably since that would make the chances of losing it somewhere quite high. It's secured by cross-stitching, impossible to remove but good for withstanding regular opening. The opening end has two plastic poppers which do protrude quite a bit and may get sloppy with wear. Some velcro might have been better... By the way, all their cases are apparently covered by a "Lifetime Warranty", so if it gets knackered by normal use you can theoretically send it back for free replacement...

Unfortunately, if you want to have your N82 in a clip case that doesn't need to be opened before full access, you will find, as I have, that the Krusell Classic - whilst flawed - is the only option available on the UK market (unless someone knows different). I've had one for a few weeks now and, whilst it does the job reasonably well, I'm not that pleased with it. Partly as I stupidly bought one in haste from a shop on Oxford Street for 25 and later found them for 8.99 on the Web! By visiting the shop I was able to try one on though, and a warning - the fit does vary. I eventually bought the third one they unpacked for me and still it's not perfect (some of the cut-outs don't line up that well, and it's so tightly packed you can't pull it around much). But generally it's OK, not that bad looking, but more functional than sexy - but I need the high degree of protection. The clip has only allowed the phone to fall from my pocket twice (with no damage). I wear my phone inside my hip pocket, face in, clipped to the outside - again, this is about the only case style which allows this. I've only ever had one leather phone case ever with a clip that NEVER let the phone fall out...and Krusell appear to do a wide variety of interchangable clips for other applications.

Inevitably I'm finding a thin film of moisture gets sandwiched between the screen and the underside of the clear plastic face cover, which looks slightly unpleasant in standby but doesn't have any effect on visibility when actually using the phone. I was surprised at first to find there was a large cut-out for the 'joystick' button, and yes it will allow a bit of dust & moisture in, but perhaps the fit is so tight that Krusell's designers found it would keep getting depressed accidentally if they'd covered it over. Maybe. I've left the transparent stickers that come affixed to the new phone on mine, under the case - from experience, the screen can still get scratched by micro-particles trapped between. Anyhow, hope this helps!

I'm using this casing now. Pure leather, slightly pricey but value for money. Turkey made leather casing.

Am actually looking for Vaja case first, but Vaja still haven't launch the case for N82 at the time I order Beyza case.

You stated that the case & pouch has a magnetic catch. It does'nt, it has a velcro fatening.

I have only been able to find the velcro fastening version, do you have a link for the magnetic one? Would be interested in that if it can be found.

Otherwise think I may go for the Silicon Case (was gonna go for black before I saw the fluff problem...)

InvisibleShield. Or BSE, or RACEShield, or whatever variant the corporates come up with.

Awesome thing, protects from scratches like some sort of case hopped up on 'roids.
