N-Gage review: System Rush Evolution

System Rush is still just about the most impressive game you can run up on your N-Gage-compatible smartphone. But has it evolved much from what was effectively a 3D demo on Nseries handsets for the last two years? How does it stand up as a game? Pretty well, as it turns out. Read more in Ewan's rather positive review of System Rush Evolution.

I'm amazed by just how good the graphics are even without the accelerator chip. It doesn't look QUITE as good as the old demo, but it's not a million miles away from it either.

As has been said many times, Ideaworks seem to have an uncanny ability to squeeze more out of S60 phones than anyone thought possible.

there are three play modes, you miss "evacuate"
btw, awesome game, maybe too short
love multiplayer mode >=D!

No, only a thousand, perhaps. A real shame too. With the demo(s), we were shown the real deal, only to be shafted with the actual releases being cut rate (graphically). Slick marketing, Nokia.

Shame we can't play it on our 6120 Classics even though there's no technical reason why not...

Shafted? Because a demo from two years ago isn't exactly the same as the game released now?

The final release version has a free demo too, in fact you have to download the free demo before you can buy the full version. There's no way anyone would buy this thinking it looks like the 2006 demo.

I think more people would have felt shafted if this had been an N93/N95/N82-only release, it would have excluded all N81 and N73 owners. Obviously best of all would have been two versions, but this is better than a chip-only version.

Yup, totally agree. If there's one current phone which deserves to get added to the platform, it's the 6120 Classic. It would do wonders for N-Gage's userbase too.

no nokia should do more to support 3dacceleration or risk falling behind apple

Nokia sells over 400 million phones a year, Apple sells less than 10 million. The gap is still rather large.

Getting back on topic, the most important thing that a games platform needs isn't technology, but a large userbase. Once you have a large userbase, loads of people will buy the games, so loads of companies publish games, which makes even more people buy that platform.

The PS2 had worse graphics than the Xbox, but it was the PS2 that got all the software support and sales because it had a very large userbase.

Look at how the Wii is selling compared to the 360 or PS3, even though Nintendo admit the Wii is a generation behind its rivals technically. It's because the Wii is very cheap and easy to use, which helps get it a huge userbase.

The best thing Nokia could do is start adding N-Gage support to their cheaper smartphones, like the 6120 Classic or the upcoming 6220 Classic. They're just as powerful as the N81, but they are much cheaper to buy, so it would help increase N-Gage's userbase a lot.
