mapgs.google.com in an N95 8GB

Hi!
I'm quite new to using such a high-tech phone as the N95 8Gb, but never the less I've promised my self that I AM going to master it, sooner or later. :P
I have a GPS tracker hidden in my car for security, so if my car gets stolen, I send an sms to my tracker and it responds with a link to it's location in google maps. The thing is that my phone can't view the website properly so I see nothing..
Anyone who knows a webreader that works on my N95 8Gb and that can handle google maps?

Worth adding is that there's nothing wrong with the link sent from my tracker since it works perfectly if you type it in on a computer..

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lovesign 😊
Thx for your response 😊

Unfortunately neither nokias original browser nor opera mini nor opera nor jb5 are able to display google maps properly, one of them managed to show a strongly distorted image which was far from what I could call functioning, I think it was Opera mini.

Regarding Googles own applet it's unfortunately not working for my device either since I get a link to google maps, and even though it's possible to get the location in Longitude/Latitude aswell I don't think it would work since there ain't anywhere in the google maps applet where you can type in "show me this and that position" anywhere.

If anyone could tell me "haha u'r so totally wrong just do this and that and it works perfectly" I'd be very very happy 😊 Or perhaps if you know another alternative browser which is moore powerful? I tried to search for Firefox for symbian but I couldn't find one 😞

best regards

what version of the firmware are you using, it might be that you have got an older version of the web browser.

I hope this is correct info..
First of all it's Three - Sweden branded, dunno if that puts any limitations on it?
anyway,
OS-version: V15.0.015
last OS-update: never updated.

Hi AtreX, if you have installed the proper Google Maps application then the Search facility on it is awesome - it's very flexible. Search is the top right soft key.

Just enter a lat/long combination and it'll find it. Separate the lat & long by a space, comma or forward slash, it doesn't mind.

Do you have an example of the link that you get sent? This will help us get you a reliable solution. Thanks!

Hi GordonShowers!
First of all, I'm really happy for you people spending time to help me 😃

Your proposal is splendid, except that my head is much moore limited than my phone when it comes to remembering numbers, one way could be to copy the longitude and write down the latitude on a piece of paper, but honestly this feels a bit like buying a Ferrari with a Volvo-engine..

I can get the data in two diffrent ways, either as a direct link to google maps, like this one:

"OK! http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=57.660433,11.942783&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1"

Or I can get it like this:

"OK! 2008/04/18, 12:04:30, N, Lat: 5739.6057, E, Lon:01156.5595, Spd: 0.00"

(This is probably not the same positions, but I guess that doesn't matter)

Very happy for all the help I can get!

Just wondering if anyone has found anything interesting? It would be very very appretiated if anyone could help me on this matter 😊

just use google maps and paste the lat/long right into the search field. it takes you to the location. google maps is an application that you download and install on the n95. its not the google maps website.

Hi RogerPodacter
Thank you for your response, but unfortunately this is not working by some reason. And if I do this way you purpose I can only copy either the long or the lat, so I have to type down the one I don't copy by hand so that I can type it in afterwards, which makes it quite clumsy..
Big thanks for your time anyway!

but you claim that you get an SMS with the coordinates, correct? if so, then just copy and past the coordinates from the SMS into google maps. if you dont get the coordinates in the SMS, then yes maybe it will be clumsy.

I do get an SMS with the co-ordinates, as can be seen in a post above. But, you can only copy one coordinate at the time, which means that I still have to type down the other coordinate by hand. And I cant save just one coordinate in the searching, get out to the sms and copy the other coordinate either since the search wont get saved. And as I said, even if I type the coordinates down on a piece of paper it doesnt work for some reason.

Hi Atrex. It sounds like as you are unfamiliar with smartphones, you don't realise that they can run multiple applications at the same time.

You can have your messaging application showing your SMS and your Google Maps application running at the same time.

If you hold down the button to the left of the D-pad for a couple of seconds (the one that brings up the useful fast menu, not the useless pretty one), it will show the applications that are running. You can use this to switch between the SMS and Google Maps without exiting either application to copy both coordinates across.

Alternatively, you could copy a larger chunk of the text message with both coordinates, then delete the bits you don't want. You can do this by opening the text message and selecting "forward" to make the text message editable. From here you can use the button with a picture of a pencil along with the D-pad to select the block of text you want to copy. You can than paste it in to Google maps and delete any junk you don't want.

Hope that's of some use.

perfect advise, i was about to write the same thing. so yes, just run both apps and toggle between google maps and the text message. i would just copy the entire coordinates, then paste into google maps search, and delete the bits that dont make sense.

Hi argh!
You are perfectly correct on your statement about my experiences with smartphones, I've had this one for like 3 weeks and it's my first smartphone ever :P

Your post was of help, definitively. I had no idea that you could copy-paste in that way, or switch between applications that easy 😊

But unfortunately it still wont help the google maps application to let me find my cars position.. 😞 I manage to copy and paste in the long and latitude into the application, but when I press search it takes a while and then it says "No results found". I've tried to remove all of the extra junk and just search for "5739.6052, 01156.5567" but it just won't work 😞
Thanks for telling me how to use a smartphone though 😊

well i was able to load those GPS coordinates when i moved the dicimal place over 2 spots. however it placed it on the map in the ocean, so i dont know if that is where your car is or not!!

so is it working or not? when you first load google maps after a new install, it actually gives GPS coordinates as an example of what you can search. so this has to work somehow for you right?!?

Well, just as you're saying, If I move the decimal-point two steps to the left I get a marker, but it's not located where I am :P And allthough I have noted that you have to count with some distortion when the car isn't moving it's only been about 50-100 meters before so I don't think that's the problem.. Or.. at least I hope it's not. :P Well, now I've at least got something!

Or I can get it like this:

"OK! 2008/04/18, 12:04:30, N, Lat: 5739,6057, E, Lon:01156.5595, Spd: 0.00"

Ah, I see what's happening now.

The first example is in fractions of a degree as a decimal, i.e. 57.660433,11.942783.

Whereas the second example is in degrees & minutes. So 5739.6057, 01156.5595 is 57 degrees 39.6057 minutes, 11 degrees 56.5595 minutes.

So they are in fact the same coords and you must enter the FIRST format into Google Maps.

Let us know if it works for you!

When you quoted me I see that I made a misstake when I tried to copy the text from the SMS to here, in Latitude there is a comma separating the first and the second part. A correct copy would instead be N, Lat:5739.6057, E, Lon:01156.5595, Spd: 0.00". I hope this didn't effect anything 😞

It took me a while to get what you mean, but at last I got it 😊
And believe it or not, it actually IS working!?!
So all I have to do now (havn't tested yet, but I bet it'll work!) is to set my device to send links and then copy-paste the things after "q=" to get things right 😊

BIG THANX all of you for great help, at last I can sleep tight at nights, perfectly confident and ready to surprise any car thief foolish enough to steal my car 😃

Oh, and just by the way, if anyone laters finds a very powerful webreader sometime that can handle the maps.google.com website, just let me know, either by dropping an answer here in the forum, by private msg or by email to me at atrex_swe(at)hotmail.com
Best wishes and GREAT thanks once again!

Hi,

I too was looking for a URL you could go to which would launch Google Maps or Nokia Maps with the right position but it looks like the only way is to copy and paste.

In answer to your question above though it's the other format of longitude and latitude you want to paste into the Google Maps search -
57.660433, 11.942783.

If you get the SMS with the google maps link in, you should be able to select & copy the longitude and latitude in one go (with the , between) and paste it straight into the search box in google maps.
