Version Updates, Batteries and Video

Hi,

I am new to this forum and to my N95 8GB, which I have had for a couple of weeks.

It's an ex Vodafone, unlocked, which I purchased privately in the UK which has a PAYG Orange sim card in it.

The software version on the phone at the moment is V15.0.015, which while a branded phone was directly updated off the Nokia Europe site, ( not vodafone site), so I was told by the seller.

I have read the newest version is V21 but may be causing problems, should I update?

Checking on some on line sites I saw there was a 2200 mAh high capacity battery available for my phone, ( my existing is 1200 mAh ) has any one experienced recent troubles with fitting a higher capacity battery, over heating or any other problems, I realize another battery cover will be required.

The phone itself was pretty easy to set up but when I try to shoot video I can only record about 2 seconds worth so it appears in playback.

I access the video by the camera button on the phone.

Why can I not shoot for longer, I have 6550 gb of free memory.

It's up to you wether you want to update it or not, but you'll have to de-brand the phone to update it to v20.0.016 there is no v21 for the 8gb version that I know of? (see the de-branding sticky thread)

I did it with my voda branded phone and all is well. As far as your video capture problem is concerned, are you sure it's saving to the card and not the phone memory?

Understand I've only had mine a week and haven't read the manual, but that would be the first thing I'd check. When you have the camera on select options>settings>memory in use and make sure it's set to mass memory not phone memory.

hope that helps.

Thanks for all that Rosstackular, very helpfull.

Could not get camera to shoot video longer then 2 seconds and things were set to mass memory.

Even managed to crash the damn thing, as any flavor of N95s are prone to do now and then, couldn't even turn it off so had to remove the battery and do it that way.

I didn't realize, ( and would have had I too read the manual ), that a red dot appears when video recording and this was not happening along with a count down.

Anyway in camera mode under options>settings>reset camera, I chose that and voilà, everything now working, video recording OK.

When you have your phone in video mode, if you keep it very still, does it freeze on and off very quickly just for a few seconds, mine does, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with video stabilization.

Think I will go for an extended 2200 battery and see how I go.

I read Sticky's thread, my error V20 I should have put.

If I de-brand, my product code is 0557135, as I'm in the UK will Euro 1 do?

I'd be careful when getting a higher capacity battery. There's been reports that they don't actually allow the phone to last longer than maybe an hour than normal, and because they're not official their lifespan is said to be roughly 6 months at best before they stop holding a charge... or go *POP*.

Still, not about to say "don't get one" cos I've not tried them. All the above is hearsay, but in my opinion if these extended batteries were worth it, there'd be much less people on here complaining of short battery life.

BTW Yeah Euro1 is the code you're after.

Thank you Zxon, I read what you say about the battery, perhaps I need to do a little more research before rushing in, there cheap enough, just wish to avoid damaging the phone.

Euro 1 it is then, much appreciated.

Yeah, I'd echo what was said about the battery, you really aren't gonna get that much more out of it and from my personal experience these phones charge stupidly fast. If you de brand, yes EURO 1 is what you want.

That code you have up there is the same as mine, not sure how you managed to get it on V20 without de-branding unless it was recently released by voda, mine would only go as high as v15 - but all the voda crap gets removed once EURO 1 is applied.

I have confused the issue Ross, my version is 15 something or other, this was updated from the original V11 and V15 was down loaded from the Nokia Europe site, not Voda' site.

So I would have to de-brand before updating to V20 from Nokia's site.

Does Voda' have a version update higher then Nokia's V15 if that makes sense?

I was looking through the instruction book yesterday evening,( I thought it was about time ), as mine is an unlocked Vodafone on Orange does my phone support voice activated dialing and can I record a phone conversation via the phone?

Yes sorry, I confused myself a little. Ok the vodafone release went from v11 to 15 via the nokia updater which we all use. When you de brand your phone to EURO 1 not only will you loose all the voda branding, but when you run the software updater again it will show a new version of firmware out, which is version 20 - which I'm currently running now and all is fine.

Thank you Ross, may I ask, before your firmware update, did/does your phone support voice activated dialing.

I have spoken to Vodafone tech', they say it does, they flaped around for 10 minutes, getting me to do this and that to no avail, finaly they said it was a firmware update but that was just to get rid of me, they suggested I speak to Nokia.

Does de-branding and upfirming to V20 allow your phone to support voice activation dialing?

It's something I've never actually tried, but I just had a diddle with it and it got all Steven Hawking on me, but I was able to open appz and other stuff just fine. I haven't got a clue how to assign a voice command to a contact, I'm literally all ears if you could explain assigning a word to dial a number in contacts?

If I say someone's name it'll pull their contact and dial it - but say I wanna record "evil witch" via the voice recorder how do I assign that to my wifes name?? This will teach me for never having a fancy phone....

Oh never mind, if you enter a name under "nick name" in the properties of the contact it recognizes it by voice command. Now all I got to do is work out how to display downloaded video on the carousel thing that aren't from the phone memory and I'm mostly set*

*Feel free to jump in here anyone.

I have been fiddling with Nokia's help Ross, unbelievably so the Nokia gentleman said, voice dialing it's not shown on their system or any instruction manual.

It was trial and error, if you press and hold the right blue button on your phone when at the start screen, up comes voice command, speak a name in your contacts, and it will dial that number for you, it's a little slow but also works fine with my Jabra blue tooth head piece, activate and speak the name.

I'm sure you have this or it's freely available else where but the Nokia help line number is 08450-455555.

Oh I got the voice dialing thing down, I just had to play with it for a little bit, so obviously to answer your question - it works fine on v20 FW.

The instructions like you say are fairly non existent, but once I found the lil activate voice key it wasn't too bad.
