Eseries Internet Radio

I'm really not at all sure of exactly when this went live, but Internet Radio support for the Nokia E65 and E51 wasn't there a month or so ago and, well, now it is. Making my wife and a lot of other E65 and E51 users very happy indeed. Here's the Nokia Internet Radio download page - highly recommended. Comments welcome if you've got this working on non-listed compatible devices!

Read on in the full article.

now make it work with realmedia streams (which the gallery app can already do, just awkwardly) and wma streams, and it will be a great app.

right now its pretty much useless.

The internet radio app have been in beta for a long time now. Hope to see it go final and integrated into rom soon.

I'm waiting for username/password support for streams (premium stream from di.fm use the normal http:// username😛[email protected]/stream.m3u authentication)

I have had the app running on my E61i since it first appeared. The only glitch is that the soft keys legends appear up the right hand side of the screen instead of at the bottom. Maybe one day, eh Nokia?

I did try some of the versions on the E51 a month ago and they wouldn't work. Either way, it's nice to have official support now.

Nokia's Internet radio app has always worked on the E51, I just used the same one as for the N95 8Gb.

How does this new version work with E90? In the beta before, you had to start the program in the small outside screen and then switch to inside screen in order to change volume with chr+v and chr+b. Very inconvenient.

Does this new version allow more flexibility?

On the subject of internet radio streaming, the next big thing scheduled for OggPlay is internet radio support. If you head over to the forums there's a beta download that has support for vorbis icecast streams. I guess there aren't many people that listen to vorbis streams though 😞

While they're certainly a "niche" area, there're countries (for example, Finland) where several radio stations use OGG in addition to MP3.

Of coure, the majority of streams are WMA / RealAudio streams, with HE-AAC v2 increasing steadily. RealAudio is supported by S60 (RealOne) but only in RTSP mode - this should be fixed. And, of course, WMA and HE-AAC v2 support added.

I, again, recommend http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/68414/#post356920 for a COMPLETE overview of Symbian + Windows Mobile radio streaming solutions. Partricularly recommended for Nokia's engineers.

I have never managed to get the IR Player to work on my E90, despite having tried versions for various different models; whenever I try to "search" it just quits...

It works on E90. I've used it for countless hours.

I added the address of the desired radio manually.

Which version of Internet Radio are you using (ie. for which device was it intended), as I still can not get it to work?

Cheers, Ian.

I installed the version for the E65 on my E90 and it works.

Works fine on E-61i with original firmware using Edge in U.S. via T-mobile. Agree with Jonquirk on misplaced menu items for this device forcing one to be more adaptable in its use. Music streams without rebuffering pauses even on best quality setting.

Using Sony Ericsson HBH-GV435A bluetooth headset. Adjusting volume on ear-piece interacts nicely with application while music is playing. It brings up an interactive vertical volume slider. Haven't had a phone call while music is playing. Would be interesting to see how politely radio software handles phone call.

I've also been using this app since it first appeared; forget which version it was, but it works fine on the E61 with the exception of the misplaced softkey labels. It would be nice if they would release an E61 version...certainly can't take much work to move the labels. 😉

I have been using its predecessor, the S60 Internet Radio reference app, for almost two years now, and it still works nicely as well (even if it's a bit rough around the edges). And since I more recently obtained S60 2nd Edition devices, I have used that version with good results as well...it is simply staggering to stream Internet radio on a 6682 over the T-Mobile USA EDGE network! And to think that the previous owner of the 6682 thought it was 'just a phone'...sad.

On the E61, I found that both the old Nokia reference app, as well as the one referenced in this article, can run simultaneously, and play separate streams quite independently. Even more amazingly, LCG Jukebox can play a third stream at the same time, and the default music player in the ROM can play a FOURTH audio source (a local MP3 file) simultaneously! Now that is what I call a multimedia powerhouse. Naturally, playing three Internet streams requires a WLAN connection. 😉

OMG, now that is freaky...I didn't try that before: LCG Jukebox playing one stream over WLAN, while the S60 reference app plays another stream over EDGE, on the same phone, at the same time...wow!

Oh, and not quite sure why anyone would want to play archaic, closed, poor quality formats which are not used in the real world (i.e. realaudio and wma)...virtually all useful content is using standard Shoutcast-compatible MP3 streaming.

Hi Buster/Ian,

I have been using the version that came out with the title "Nokia Internet Radio (beta)". I downloaded it pretty much right away as it was available. I can't remember the exact date but it was months ago. The version I'm using has the same appearance as this latest one seems to have (by the look of the screen grabs). I'm not even sure if the application has been updated at all, maybe they just added couple of new Eseries models to the compatibility list?

To use Nokia Internet Radio (beta) on E90 you install the version that is available, even though E90 is not listed as a compatible device. Once you've installed it, you have to run it from the smaller outside screen. In order to change volume, you have to switch to inside screen and adjust the volume using chr+v and chr+b.

I only ever listen to one station. I added it via Options - Add station manually. I checked the correct address using some PC app, it might have been Winamp, not sure. It is a Shoutcast station.

Hope this helps

Hey guys!

I tried to install the internet radio program on my nokia E51, and it works, but I can't stream by GPRS/3G. I only have the WLAN option when the app boots. When I go to the settings menu I can also only choose Easy WLAN or my home WLAN AP. Is there anything I can do to fix streaming over the cellular network? I do have unlimited internet access and stuff.. It would be nice to listen my favorite stations in the train for example.

Thanks a lot!

Greetz,
Tim

goto settings>select your edge/gprs access poing and then set "standard speed/48kbps or less for the stream quality & voila it plays SUPERB !!! cheers )
