Maps 2.0 update

Well, you certainly can't accuse the Nokia Maps team of rushing things.... Still, the latest (and possibly last) beta of Maps 2.0 is available today for anyone with a S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 device (e.g. the N95), although there's no changelog that I can see. Comments welcome.

Read on in the full article.

Changes I've noticed so far:
* Faster start-up; new start-up screen
* Street names on smaller roads; more detail on maps
* New 'striped' indicator in satellite and hybrid modes, to denote lack of satellite coverage.
* Faster zooming & scrolling
* Map updates (seemingly there's more building-shape data, at least where I live)

I wonder if it will ever be available for non feature pack 1 S60 3rd edition? E61 specifically???

Is it really good enough to replace TomTom Navigator 6?

@ratkat: Earlier beta 2.0 did not cancel my 3 years subscription on the N95 classic. It works for the previous map 2.0. Besides you can alway reinstall your firmware and get rid of it. In this Nokia is no stinch. Then again this is what it should be.

@Chris Handley: The previous 2.0 was already very nice. Routing is now mostly through the main roads and not byways. They make better use the screen and roadsigns etc... The routing is good, the voice information is good and if you miss it because of some reason, the display will fix you with the proper info. The POI search is pretty good, much better than Map24 or google search.

No regrets shelling out 70 euro for 3 years (benelux plus) since the license will go with me to my upcoming future Nokia touch device 😉 Also you can buy a license for the country where you go on a trip for a week or month. Which is really nifty. Instead of finding the tourist office for a local map and info you can start cruising that alluring strange city right away! Whished boingo could be paid for a week.

On my E51 it refuses to recognise my previous (free) 30 day license (with 10 days left), even though it appears under Options/Extras/My licenses and after updating, everytime you try to use routing it asks me to buy a license again.
Nokia Care won't help me because they say it is Beta Software, ok so I'm not that worried about 10 days.

However on my N82 I have 2 months of my free 90 day license left which I don't really want to lose, Nokia Care say if I install it and it doesn't work they won't help.

Trying out near work in centralish London (well SE1) I'm seeing building detail where I didn't before. This came before I updated the maps - so I guess the info was always there in the maps but not showing on the original 2.0 beta.

Walking around just now it seemed to get a signal more easily then sometimes in the past, but this was purely a subjective observation and it could I guess be other factors.

BTW: This version shows as 2.0 wk18 in the build.

Has anyone else had a problem removing this? I want remove it from phone memory and reload it in card memory, but it refuses to remove the app..?

I have a 3 year license.

Can I transfer my license over?

If I don't like maps 2.0 can I remove?

Thanks

This release fixes the cosmetic problems with the E90 inner screen and the (ridiculous) transposition of the soft button labels.

Well it looked better for a while. Yes the app seems to run o.k, but the map data update that is whole different story.

At least I can navigate to my house correctly (and not do a right hand turn over a traffic island), but the maps for Melbourne, Australia are all screwed up. The images are wrong in the midrange zooms, the water is not showing ie the Yarra River and the bay are just missing... So not helpful at all.

Now I have to wait for the maps to be updated to actually test things properly. But at is stands the map update has ruined the whole experience! (do I get extra days on my license for navigation for the time that the maps for my home city are unusable???? I don't think so!)

@all license worried people

If you want, and the upgrade does not work for you. You can go back to the old maps. Do a firmware reinstall! Obviously you back up all relevant data first 😉. The firmware reinstall clears the map application and you can install the previous map upgrade or none. Whatever pleases you. License should work and be supported since it is not a beta application. Previous map upgrades 'patched' the firmware and as such deinstall most like does not work.

Nokia Maps beta is by far the best Navigation tool (I tried every single one), until google starts to add real navigation to their google maps mobile application.

Things I like to change:
- search function should display similar results, if no results have been found.
- I don't like the way, the search results are categorized (walk / drive / Places). Often I have to browse through different categories to find the result I want.

I think the search function is very important. On the other parts, I'm very happy as it is.

Excellent - one minor E90 issue.

Although the softkeys are fixed on the internal screen (and the menus are generally easier), the zoom in/out on the internal screen is controlled by left/right shift keys not the # * that appears by the icon.

Havent tried the turn by turn or traffic yet as I only subscribe when I need it.
