...is that the N81 produces better audio then e.g. the N95. That is, if i can believe the graphs they have about the audio fidelity on gsm-arena. I have no hands-on experience with the N81. I do have it with the N95, and i think it's absolutely rubbish for listening to music. Especially the mid and high tones are very distorted and vague. Same goes for my N93, and for that reason i don't use it for music anymore, which is a shame =|

Well, this is the problem, it depends on how much of an audiophile you are. I've never noticed that much difference between music phones if I'm totally honest.
It could be because I always use the same set of third party headphones with every phone, whereas many people make the mistake of trying to use the usually-cheap headphones that come with a phone.
thats why i still use my Nokia N91 8GB, this handset wipes the floor with anything whatsover, ipods dont even come close, perfect volume levels, crisp sound, great bass and nice mids and highs
and the above is with the standard head phones 😊

N81's audio playback through earphones is acceptable, neither superb nor lousy. It's still much better than the N95 though.
