Snakes Subsonic is out now (but you may have to clear your cache to see it)

The eagerly-awaited next gen N-Gage game Snakes Subsonic is now available from the N-Gage application's showroom. However, we couldn't see it at first even when we did an "Update Now", the only way we got it to appear was rather complicated. Click on the headline to find out how we did it.

Steve notes: the above was Krisse's experience, by the way. Snakes Subsonic appeared without any messing around in my N-Gage install on the N95. Wierd!

I'm using an N95 as well so this is strange.

One thing it might be is how recently you checked the showroom. I checked it quite frequently last night, so the copy of the showroom's flash file might have been fresher in my cache than in Steve's.

Ooh dear, I'm not too impressed with the first minute or two of this game, it seems less smooth than the original Snakes, and has less slick graphics. The camera angles are also a bit annoying.

But I'm not doing the review and I've only played this for two minutes so don't take this too seriously... 😊

Download the demo and see for yourself!

Agree with krisse.
The graphics was "ok", but it wasn't as smooth as the original. I would play it if it was free, but i don't want to pay 60 NOK (12 USD, 6 GBP) for it.

Anyone know when is Nokia launching n-gage compatibility for the other handsets they had mentioned?

As far as the upcoming handsets go (N78, N96, 5320) they should be compatible when they launch, but we have no idea at all when the N93 and N73 will get compatibility.

The N73/N93 issue has come up regularly on the official N-Gage blog and the maintainer has always replied that he doesn't know.

This game wasn't what I expected at all. And where's the "music driven gameplay"?

the N73/N93 issue has been announced by nokia since last year if I'm correct but still they have not yet released anything for these 2 phones! Makes you wonder if Nokia is engaging the right persons to do the job for the N73/N93 or is it a marketing strategy by the company itself to make the wait unsupportable for these users and forcing them to buy a new handset! I mean, it's been too long since the announcement of the ngage2.0 last year and these 2 phones are still without a proper ngage client - it can't be that long for nokia to fix that up nope? what do you think - is it a marketing strategy or are they really having troubles to fix the memory ram issue?

Returning back to the topic - after seeing the pics and the trailer : is it me or the game is really a disappointment? At this moment, I won't personally spent cash on that game because it seems too simplistic from what i've seen...they could have dig up more to make this a great game but maybe i'm wrong, I'll wait and see the other users's opinions for it!

Clad, I suspect they're having problems with the N93 and N73 because they're the oldest handsets and they have the smallest amount of free RAM.

The N73 was apparently the reference hardware for the platform and its games, so in theory everything should work on it, but maybe they've accidentally exceeded the abilities of the reference hardware with the finished product.

On Snakes Subsonic, I was disappointed too when I tried the demo, it feels a lot less smooth and looks much cheaper than the original Snakes. However, demos are just demos, they don't necessarily represent the whole game (just look at the appalling Block Breaker demo!). We ought to wait for Ewan's review to see if it gets better once you've played it for a while.

Incidentally, those who want the original Snakes can get it for free for their N-Gage / S60 3rd handsets. It will probably be available in the Games section of your Download! icon, but if it isn't there you can get it from the Nokia 5700 support page (this version works on all S60v3 handsets):

Plays nothing like the original snakes 😞

Would it be so hard to use the same old smooth engine of the original? And the sound, looks like mono or something?

This definitely confirmed my fears of making the N73 compatible, with this and the license fiasco I'm losing my faith on N-Gage 2

Regarding the graphics and sound quality: if you put the original Snakes and Snakes Subsonic side by side, I bet most people would think the original is the sequel.

It's odd that they didn't use the original developers Iomo (or whatever they're called now). The original Snakes was an absolute masterpiece and so neatly programmed, apparently the total game code came in at less than one megabyte, the rest of the installation file was just music.

Instead they went for Barking Lizards, who did the X Men Legends games on the original N-Gage (which got pretty good reviews, but it was an isometric RPG rather than a 3D action/puzzle game).

I like the PEGI rating on the download page for the game (on the phone):

Bad Language
Gambling
Drugs
Sexual Content
Fear
Violence
Discrimination
3+

Snakes and GTA4 combined? With a 3+ rating? 😊

LOL argh, you're absolutely right, that's quite disturbing! 😊

I think they've accidentally listed the categories instead of the actual ratings, or something like that. They should have said "No gambling" etc.
