Snakes: Was it really that good, or are we being nostalgic?

The game Snakes was released as a free download for the original gen N-Gage way back in 2005. A sequel, Snakes Subsonic, has just been released in 2008, but was a disappointment for the All About N-Gage team, getting an AAN score of just 49%. Was the original Snakes really that much better though? As Snakes has now been re-released for next gen N-Gage phones, we've re-reviewed it as if it was a next gen N-Gage game. Click on the link to find out how it compares to what we've seen so far on the modern N-Gage platform...

Read on in the full article.

It's quite striking from comparing the graphics how messy Subsonic looks compared to the original.

The original's graphics had colours that matched and a playing area that went off into a dark horizon, while Subsonic seems to be just lots of random graphical elements thrown together without much thought.

Yeah, the original NGage snakes has certainly stood the test of time & is still great to play even now.

In fact it's the shining light on my Nokia N93 that keeps me going while I wait for the official NGage 2.0 support.........my phone ain't getting any younger :saint:

Tetlee, just out of interest, have you tried any S60 games on your N93? There's some quite good ones, and I was thinking of doing an AAN feature about them.

PS: lol at that smiley!

krisse, not yet, haven't seen any of interest so far with exception to K-Rally but that looked pretty pricey for a Java game(think it was something like $15.00 which seemed a bit steep).

Would be very interested to see an article recommending S60 games though as to be fair I have no idea what to look out for.
My favourite genre for mobile device games is turn-based tactics, anything along the lines of Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem, Vandal Hearts or Nokia's once classic Pathway to Glory. Not keen on 3D racers myself, to me they just aren't ideal on a mobile device, top down works better though as Glimerati on NGage was pretty decent.

Think that feature would be very helpful for alot of us, especially for those waiting patiently for NGage 2.0 support. Will watch this space:icon14:

Ah, well this is the interesting part, it's not a Java game, it's a Symbian S60 game.

S60 games are technically the same thing as N-Gage games, N-Gage is effectively just Nokia's brand name for their S60 games. Unlike Java games, S60 games can access the phone's hardware more directly and more completely, so they usually look better and work more smoothly.

K-Rally is made by the same people as Creatures Of The Deep, and I'd recommend it just as highly.

Oh well that's settled then, I'll do it!

I see, interesting, goes to show how out of date I am with phone gaming, gave up on it after selling my original NGage and being completely underwhelmed by Java in comparison.

Look forward to the feature😎

if you're on the subject of idreams, try superminers as well! LOVED it! krally was pretty fun too, but nothing on superminers i thought

All of Infinite Dreams' games are good, they're one of the highest-quality phone game developers out there right now. It's not just the graphics, they also judge the control system and gameplay well for a phone.

Nokia was very wise to get them to do N-Gage games, apparently Idreams is already working on their next N-Gage title.
