ok so when i type in a new message i only get special characters and when i try to dial a number in the normal fashion none of the numbers work only the * also the square selection key doesnt open pictures and contacts and messages it just puts a tick up the top right of the item

when you are in the new text message, press star * and it brings up the symbols menu. or press the pencil key and select MORE SYMBOLS. not sure i exactly understand what you are asking.
also what do you mean the square selection key doesnt work? you mean the Dpad? so you are now in the gallery trying to look at pictures and it wont select them? your sentence doesnt explain what you are asking. just press the center button to select a picture or contact or message. you might possibly have a defective phone or a fake n95.
