I've just had a strange text from 'My Nokia' telling me that there's a new software update available for my phone online or via a service center. I've never had a text from them for previous updates. I can't remember how you choose your phone when you sign up to My Nokia. If it's via IMEI number or product code then I guess it would be branded firmware that T-Mobile have just released. If not then I guess it'd be generic. I unbranded my handset long ago.
Is there a software update available for the N95-1?
The latest firmware/software versions for the N95-1 generic are V21 and for the N95-2 (8GB) generic is V20. You can check which firmware you have installed on your phone by entering *#0000# from the front screen.
If you have a branded phone then you can check for firmware updates on this Nokia site:-
Yeah, v21's what I've got. Just thought it was a bit odd since they've never notified me of any update before, and usually there are a few rumours knocking around just beforehand. Must be a T-Mobile update. The networks are always ages behind. Thanks for the reply.
I got a message from My Nokia too.
I'd be surprised if the IMEI number enabled Nokia to know which "brand" a handset was set up as. Surely Nokia just ship a shed load of handsets to the mobile provider, T-Mobile, for example, and the provder themselves deal with the software branding etc.
In addition, for unlocked handsets no longer restricted to the source network or handets unlocked from outset, original data obtained from the factory will no longer be valid.
So either a genuine software update available or an error from My Nokia, imho.

I wouldnt be surprised if it did , I know your provider can tell what handset you have your sim in, I got my N95 from vodaphone on contract but have never used sim in it instead have it in a p910i and one day got call inquiring how i was getting on and was i happy with service etc during call the person asked if I liked the p910i, this phone was brought sim free so nothing to do with vodaphone so only one way they could know what i was using.
Makes me wonder what else they know !!!

IMEI numbers will enable a handset to be known without a doubt. The point I made above is I don't think IMEI number alone will enable someone to work out your mobile provider.

Apparnetly there is an update for T-mobile branded handsets, version 14.0.001.
But before any one gets excited it is, to quote, "pants" according to this posting on another forum.
