So we've been waiting months for Nokia's Ovi Sync. And along comes Nokia Backup instead, ostensibly everything that Ovi Sync will be. The two have got to be linked, surely? I've been trialling Nokia Backup and it's a bigger and better system than you might think, with what I think is a world first. Read on.
Read on in the full article.
Few things I have found, perhaps only for me...
Synced notes from phone to website are all crammed in subject, nothing in the details.
I dont get any addresses from contacts on the website, even though they are definatly in the phonebook.
Otherwise I really like it. Shame it doesnt sync active notes, but thats to be expected.
Doesn't sync 'Internet phone' or 'Sip' numbers
and it screwed up all my birthday reminders on my phone, it appeared to add new entries based on my contacts birthdays, adding them all as recurring all day events with a midnight reminder'
I registered on the Nokia India site and tried it out on my e90 today.
I agree that it is extremely fast - It is true that I was using a wi-fi connection but even then it took only as much time as it usually takes for me to sync with Outlook using PC Suite and a datacable.
But the strangest thing - in spite of this being my first sync, the sync log looks like this:
Calendar :
Phone - Added 12, Deleted 2
Server - Added 862, Discarded 3
Contacts:
Phone - Updated 2, Deleted 2
Server - Added 132
I have no idea why the server updated or deleted something on my phone in the first sync itself.
I did panic and go through the calendar and contacts entries on my phone (as much as I could) and nothing seems to be obviously out of place. But I am still a bit worried and hoping that this was just some sort of false indicator.
Looks good, but sign in page is not secured, yet the My Backup pages are.
Won't allow me to ender an Australian phone number in profiles, but allowed me to configure the phone for a +61 mobile number and sent my the configuration details in SMS ok.
I wonder if the Nokia Sync application on the phone sends the sync data as SSL/HTTPS? I hope it is not sent in the clear over the net.
It seems to provide a workaround for the limitations of the native S60 PIM apps. For example, our doorstep glass collection is every four weeks on a Wednesday. I don't think this can be entered in the native calendar app (I use HandyCalendar) but seems to be understood by Nokia Backup. Interesting to see what would happen if you entered one of these "tricky" recurring appointments on the website and synced it down to the phone.

I had a similar thing myself. I'm sad enough that I usually check the log after a GooSync, and couldn't help myself after this one either. As you say, how on earth can it have found items to delete on the FIRST sync?
Julie
Does the service support phones from other manufacturers on other platforms? I have a couple of other phones, like a Motorola Ming and Sony Ericsson w960i, that I like to take out from time to time, in addition to my Nokia E65. Zyb.com already supports a boatload of devices. I'm hoping that Nokia Sync will, as well!
Can anybody post the configuration? Here in Italy the service is active, but doesn't work: no way you can get the configuration SMS. Already tried to contact Nokia Support days ago, they even didn't know what I was talking about...
Thanks,
Gabrieke
These are the settings that came with the configuration message.
Connection Settings:
Server Version : 1.1
Data Bearer : Internet
Host Address: http://pim.nokia.com/services/syncml
Port : 80
Allow Sync Requests : Yes
Accept all sync requests : No
Network Authentication : No
The username and password seems to be autogenerated. So even if you manually the rest of the details, you may not be able to get around this.
Contacts : Remote Database : ./Contact/Unfiled
Tasks : Remote Database : ./EventTask/Tasks
Notes : ./Note/Unfiled
=======
-->Host Address: http://pim.nokia.com/services/syncml
Guess this answers someone's question earlier, it is http on port 80 (not https)
Since it is based on syncml, perhaps other phones could be supported in theory? (will give this a shot on my other phone - a Motorizr Z8. But I am not holding my breath)
Thanks Ricky!
Unfortunately, as you wrote, I get the error "wrong username or password"... 😞
I don't think Nokia Backup is available for North American Users
Not available for the USA, sigh 😞
I signed up to Nokia back up about six weeks ago but have not synced my phone yet.
I keep some passwords and bank details in my mobile and I am not sure if it is safe enough or should I remove all that sort of information first?
What do you guys to?
hi
Nice to see that there exist also other sync solutions - all that what nokia backup does can be done also with egroupware's syncml solution (all works 100% compared to nokia's backup beta). Have been using it one year now and good experiences - use it also after firmware updates.
Ciao
Hey Steve
I don't mean this to sound boastful but i discovered nokia back up, back in February and have been using it ever since. I'm not sure how closely linked it is with Ovi sync though if it's been out since February. I recall you writing an article earlier this year about ovi sync but I thought that my nokia back up was common knowledge. Wish i had mentioned something now.
I've used it while on holiday over in America in march and it worked a treat.
Be Careful - the link steve provided is the to UK version of the site. Be sure to visit https://my.nokia.com, then pick your region and register.
I of course did not know this, registered under the UK site, cancelled, tried signing up again in Australia, and now it wont let me because I had previously registered my IMEI!
Hopefully Nokia Support will reply to my support email to sort this out.
I don't seem to be having any luck accessing My Backup. I've previously registered with My Nokia and when I log in and go to My Backup all I get is a blank page. Anyone have any ideas?
The link defaults to the main nokia page - www.nokia.com.
As for bookmark, instead of the one included in the article you can use this shorter one:
http://my.nokia.com/mn_XX_backup where XX is your country's short code (eg: uk - United Kingdom; my - Malaysia; fr - France, and so on. It is not available in all the My Nokia countries (yet)).
With that faulty registration: if you wait a few days, (maybe a week?) that IMEI can be re-registered without any Nokia Support action.
Link fixed - try http://www.nokia.com/mynokia
However not all regions support Nokia Backup yet.
I tried Nokia backup with my Motorizr Z8, and it obviously didnt work :-P.
But a little searching came up with this:
http://www.motorolabackup.com
Looks like Motorola has the same concept too, but only for the phone book.
There is a facility to backup text messages too, but this seems to be a paid service.
Whenever I go to "Go to My Nokia Backup" it goes to https://my.nokia.com/A4759356?mnb=y which is just a blank page for me.
