Nokia 6220 Classic: The Verdict
23 a month on 3 through Omio....sold.
I swapped to this from my n95 which overall i think is a good choice for me.
I loved the n95, but hated the size. This phone is great although im finding problems with software that would run fine on my n95 and the battery life is terrible.
still though, the size difference still makes it worthwhile in my eyes and im sure firmware upgrades will get rid of the niggly problems ive encountered
Are people expecting to play baseball with their phones or are they just really clumsy??. All you seem to hear is ' Its flimsy it might break' 'I might drop it and it will fall apart' And whats so dififcult about using the keypad?!? Its simple you just look at it and press the button you want, this phones keypad is fine. Are people texting while driving and need huge butons with raised markers on all the keys beacuse I cant think of any other reason its such a problem!
Ive had the Nokia 6220 classic for a while now for just 20 a month, 600mins, unlimited texts.
Its a great phone, excellent camera, maps is great, good quality music player. I compared this with Sony C902, Samsung Toco and the LG Secret and thought the build was on par with all, if anything the Sony was the one that looked and felt cheap and even with all of LG's temepered glass etc it didnt feel any more sturdy than the nokia, especially the slide mechanism which was out of line on nearly everyone i looked at, Plus the Nokia is far easier to use and takes better pictures than all of them

Build quality is important to a lot of people, me included. I like to feel that the phone is made well, and if moving from a previously well built phone, you cannot help but feel dissapointed.
I cannot use the keypad anywhere as easily as I could my 6110. Part of this is due to it being a candybar, and that the keys have to be located at the very bottom of the device. With a slight gap, its easy to do. But some of this is down to build quality, they just dont seem as responsive or solid as other phones.
Phones generally have a tough life, since they are probably the most used electronic device we own. If your using something many times a day - especially when its a smartphone with many features - you want it to be able to survive the rigors of life.
Dont get me wrong, its an amazing phone. But the build quality stopped it being short of fantastic.
Hi Guys, anyone found how to get "bt.sis" to work on the 6220c ? This app does not run on this phone which is why tomtom does not work..
Thank
Scoob
can 6220c users post their product codes and in particular sim free euro product codes if possible thanks
Overall i am more than pleased with my 6220c. Build quality is not amazing, but its perfectly adequate (with the exception of the lens cover button, which could be a problem at some point). I just does not have the fashionable finish some phones have now these days (N Series, iPhone etc). But I have never thought Nokia build quality was that special (i was not impressed at all by the n95), so maybe i'm not expecting much. I was going to get the N78, but much preferred the size and design of this one. The N78 keypad is just horrible (when will Nokia learn?). And as i have no need for an FM Transmiter.
It badly needs Wi-Fi
I disagree. Who really uses WiFi that much with a phone like this? No many people at all. The only places i have access to WiFi that much are work and home - why use my phone when i can use my PC's. When out and about, flat rate data plans take care of the rest.
If you want a small cheap phone, thats got GPS and a decent camera and video (better than the N82), then its a winner. Feature Pack 2 has made a lot of improvement to Symbian's UI too (which needs it, its looking a bit dated these days). I think its by far one of the best value phones ever. Does exactly what it says on the tin. And because its cheap, i got the tarrif i wanted + a free HD ready 19" LCD TV thrown in too 😊
I loved my N95 8GB but then the 6220 classic came along and reminded me of how much I loved the good old N73. The main draw for me is the size and candybar form factor. After a week now of having the 6220 classic I've listed some points below which are mainly in comparison to my N95 8GB:
- Smaller: The N95 8GB seems clunky and enormous compared to the truly pocketable dimensions of the 6220 classic
- Faster: The camera and gallery are faster
- Transition effects: I love them - my phone now feels special
- Geotagging: Incredible, i love it.
- Camera: BETTER than N95 8GB - better contrast and sharpness of image. Flash is briliant
- Reading out of messages - fantastic feature whilst driving and using a car kit!
- Status light - really nice touch
The 6220 classic is an awesome piece of kit. It's tiny, powerful and the GPS works exactly as the N95 phones. I cannot praise it highly enough and bought it SIM free. It's very fast and nonsense - most of the annoying superflouous rubbish on the N95 8GB such as the media key, etc. is not there...wonderful.
Only downside is FP2 which means some software doesn't work!!!
predicaments where did you buy and what product code of your unit there
Will somebody pleeeeeeease post their product code. I have the o2 product and want to de-brand it. My details are as follows:
Software version (*#0000#) is 03.06, 31-May-2008, Custom Version 03.06.218.02, 09-Jun-2008
I'll post my Product Code in a sec.
A number of the user reports I have see on Mobile Review complain of bad build quality on this phone, any owners or reviewers like to comment on it's build quality?

Lens shutter. Thats a real biggie. Not only does it feel bad, its extremely easily moved when in a pocket. Now theres loads of dust in there, and half the time its partially open. And its getting worse.
Keypad is not the easiest to use, due to the feel on the keys.
I have found my menu key has sunk somewhat, and is almost flush with the left softkey and pickup key. Same with the cancel/delete key on the other side.
Other than that, nothings wrong. It just *feels* cheap. Which it is, considering the specs.
Its pretty dissapointing though, for years I have stuck with the 6xxx range since they have had astounding build quality.
The 6220C and also the 6210N have now stopped this trend.
Fortunatly, vodafone are doing the E66 when it comes out.

That's the same kind of report as I was seeing on MR.
Phones 4 U already have this advertised in their shops on Orange PAYG 199.
Thanks for this review Steve, very helpful. As I understand the GPS navigation function charges a subscription fee, which doesn't appeal to me at all. I currently have tomtom mobile on my 6300: does anyone know if this will work with the internal GPS on the 6220?
No, it wont.
Any other software will though, tomtom are the only company not to make it compatible.
Its also possible it will not run on a FP2 device at all.
I just got this on a 20 contract with 400 mins and 500 txts. Couldnt be happier.
Best deal I have seen for this is 3. You get 300 mins or texts (any mixture) and 1Gb worth of data for 25 a month, plus handset free.
Very difficult to beat that when you need data.
Have just sent my second 6220 Classic back to Orange, both due to faulty keypads. Lets face it, the quality is terrible. It is such a shame because other than that I really did like the phone and I think Nokia has missed a trick here.
Because of this phone I find myself put off Nokia as they seem to demand high prices and have poor quility. Samsung are looking good!
hi please help does this phone have accelerometer so i can use RotateMe
"see this as a free Nokia": Are people still that ignorant (rhetorical)?
The 6220 seems to be a nice phone though, and I'm considering it as it has GPS and 3 offers 8 GB Flash, for a very competitive bundle price.
My only concern is the keypad. I text a lot (despite my age).
Must be one of the smallest Series 60 phones around.
Cheers
I recieved a 6220 classic last week and am liking it an awful lot. Only problem is the plastic screen seems to have a swirly marks on it. Not sure what to do, it is from three, I have ordered a screen protector kit and case for it to try and take care of it.
Should I get in touch with 3 and return it to them? Or will they not accept it back at this point?
Thanks for any help
Alvyn
The 6220 is prob the best phone I have had in the last 3 years, beeing phone obsessed I have had a couple.
Its a small compact phone that has all the features, A-GPS, 5 meg cam, easy to text and use the key pad.
Unlike 850i: had three all sent back, poor reception, poor software and a horrible to navigate.
Viewty: Big, bulky, have to work for NASA to opperate it, horrible to scroll and navigate and youl be lucky if the battery last a day...
The battery on the 6220 last around three days, with a fast and efficant stand by
The software system is simple and fantastic to navigate.
Predictive texting is fantastic "yes im one of those that uses it"!
Its is small
"yes"! it does not have WI FI, but with a computer on my desk at work and wireless at home it is easer surfing the internet on a lap top, no?
Size well the n95 8g is big, you can put a 8g memory card in the 6220......
Brill Brill brill to Nokia, remembering the old 5110 back in those days or the c25........
I had two brushes with Nokia smartphones and the symbian operating system and I wouldn't trust this model to a) keep its plastic cover on or b) allow you to talk for more than ten minutes or download a few football results without draining the battery. Yes its all very sleek and modern but is it? I love Nokia phones and have returned to using a mid-price wap-enabled, Bluetooth 2 Series 40 phone that cost me 30 with no problems. Granted, I'm not the sort of guy who wi-fi's about but then I have a busy job where phones aren't allowed! I just don't think 3G phones have come into their own yet, certainly not regarding battery power. And can someone post an alert at some point about a Symbian phone where the text in a message is able to be read by people over 35? Good luck with this phone, it looks great and the apps are cool, but don't expect your money back if it busts. My N73's joystick broke off the day I bought it and I got no help whatsoever from Nokia, the netweork provider, or any local store. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but you are warned!
the flimsy battery cover is a problem: i broke one of the plugs on the cover the first time i used it
Got a 6220 coming tomorrow and would like to know what people are finding with battery life.
This is with O2, 35pm - and I have no choice about the service, cos O2's is the only decent reception I get here.
I'll largely be using the 6220 just as phone (with some business-related camera stuff), so, hopefully, that might give folk a way of telling me what battery life to expect.
I'm not planning to use much of the fancier stuff to any great degree - though only time will tell - but I wanted that available just in case and, in fact, would have liked WiFi.
However, the absence of WiFi didn't seem a massive downer - I'm sure I'm not going to be able to resist buying a netbook portable PC for much longer.
That will typically be with me when I'm out and about (accompanied by a wireless dongle that came with a 10pm contract from 3) and will, I hope, also be suitable for quick-and-easy internet connectivity while, for instance, watching TV or in bed.
Thanks in anticipation.
Cheers
