N95 8GB Questions (GPS)

Hello everyone

This is my first post and I will admit i purchased this phone with about 2 days of research. I don't have much time considering my work schedual is pretty crazy this month. I just have a few questions regarding my N95 8gb GPS.

Just so everyone knows i do not have a subscription to the navagation. But i was hoping i would be able to use the maps instead. Every time I click on my maps, it asks me "application requires a network connection". I don't understand why it asks me when its the exact same with or without a connection? I recently updated my Maps to 2.0... What exactly is the connection for?

Also how come i can't get my GPS position? I thought GPS is free and its just radio waves from satilights? The flashy lights by the satiliet picture keeps flashing( im guessing theres no connection)

Anyone have guides to the free GPS apps out there where i can fully use the GPS funtion?
I appologize for the questions if they have been asked before.

I am by no means an expert; however, I understand there are several positioning methods.

You are being asked for a connection, because you probably have the "Positioning Method" set to Network based or Assisted GPS.

Try changing the Positioning Method to Integrated GPS. You'll find this setting in Tools=>Settings=>General=>Positioning=>Positioning methods.

It takes a while to lock on to the satellites, just be patient, eventually it will find them. Up to 15mins or longer sometimes.

Good luck

The Maps app will ask for a connection, especially if you have AGPS (Assisted GPS) activated. That uses your data connection to help establish a lock.

Also, make sure you've downloaded the maps for (at least) your country to your phone. If you haven't, then the Maps app will download them where necessary using your WAP/GPRS connection and if you don't have a data tarriff it could be very expensive.

To help get a lock, make sure your phone is slid open and that the 0 (zero) key is exposed. The GPS thingie is located behind that key. If you don't get a lock in a couple of minutes, try restarting your phone and then going straight to the Maps app. Once you have a lock, I find that subsequent locks are faster if you're in the same area as you were when you closed it last.

Hope this helps... and I hope I didn't sound a little condescending there.

[EDIT] Also, I've seen that lock-ons are faster if you have a subscription (10-30 seconds rather than 2-5 minutes on average) because my brother has an N95 too, but with a maps subscription.

It's strange then that my brother's N95 was as slow as mine with locking on, until he paid for a subscription. I feel it's too much of a coincidence.

i get a satellite lock in 15 seconds every time. and you guys realize the subscription has nothing to do with it. open google maps and watch the satellite lock, it happens just as fast. and google has nothing to do with nokia maps.
