N95 8GB and sat nav. Confused...

Hi all, been a lurker for a little while and thought I'd use my first post to pick your brains. Hopefully it's in the right place.

I get two brand spanking new N95 8GBs tomorrow off Vodafone for being a good boy and not ordering the jesus phone. I see the Nokia as a perfect one box solution for my ever increasing number of gadgets and one of the most useful things will be the sat nav. Here's where I get confused...

While researching the N95 8GB on the Nokia site (and elsewhere) I read about 'Nokia Maps' which I understand is a subscription based service which uses the phone's A-GPS facility to connect to the network and provide route planning and voice guidance to my destination. I've found out from this site that Nokia have bought Navteq so the guidance should be pretty good. But...

On the Vodafone site I notice that my phone will come with '3 months subscription to Vodafone SatNav and Nokia Maps voice-guided navigation'. What on earth is Vodafone SatNav and why would I need it with Nokia Maps? Surely it's one or the other?

This may sound like a question for Vodafone but when I called them the guy didn't really know and my question on the Vodafone forum seems to be causing confusion too. Over to you 😊

may be they just giving free data connection to use with Nokia maps b/c if you dont use Nokia Maploader on PC to put maps on Mass memory of phone you have to use internet connection to use the maps online, which you get charged for by vodafone b/c your using there internet connection
Apart from that ,thats all i can think of and i have a n95 8GB on vodafone and there is no navigation software by them.

it probably just means its some special vodafone version of nokia maps. what everyone here tells people who get the phone from the carrier is to immediately debrand the phone and put the generic nokia firmware back onto the phone. there is nothing but good things that come from this as the original nokia firmware is always better, less cluttered, and runs better. however i dont know how the nokia maps subscription would work with vodafone version.

i have a 6 month subscription, and even if i format the phone, the subscirption is supposed to be tied to the IMEI of the phone, so i wont lose the subscription. this is probably the way yours works too, so if you format the voda firmware you will still keep your nokia maps subscription. but i am not 100% on that so maybe someone else can verify. if you can keep it, you may want to debrand those phones.

it's no special vodafone nokia maps version i have same phone and carrier as him, a special nokia maps for vodafone don't exist.
Whatever it is it's not even known on vodafone forum ,so it is just probably some connection to maps for free or probably a free subscription to Nokia maps thrown in by vodafone
I guess we'll know in next 24 hours when he get's delivery

Vodafone satnav is a seperate program that downloads the map data as you go, like nokia maps if you don't use the map loader. Bit of a rip off if you ask me because you pay 5 a month I believe to use the service but data charges for downloading maps aren't included in the 5.

Stick with nokia maps..

Cheers for that guys.

A little more research confirms what Matt says. It appears to be an 'either/or'. The wording is a little ambiguous though. But as Craig points out, we'll see.

Little or no information on the Vodafone site about their sat nav but a quick Google tells me that Vodafone have chosen Telmap as their sat nav partner. I was always under the impression that Telmap was the poor relation to Navteq. And all a moot point I suppose if I end up using Garmin in the end...

Im pretty sure thats not the case, theres a thread on the vodafone forum saying that it will use data. And also it will cost you, unless you have a data plan.

i Found the service on vodafone live app store, what a ripp off nonthy subscriptions of 5 and data charges apply .
Don't bother with it ,Get maploader for Pc and load maps for Nokia maps

I've had my N95 8gb for over 6 months and I initially had a free 1 month trial with Nokia maps, admittedly before they bought navteq and found it not so good.

I had a look around the market and finally decided on Navigon and have found it very good indeed. It was nearly 25 cheaper than Nokia navigation who were asking an incredibly silly price for 1 & 2 year licences.

One of the things I like about the Navigon software is that although I have updated the firmware twice (now running 20.0.016) just doing a backup and restore and Navigon works flawlessly.

There are hundreds of posts on this site about GPS so I propose you read through them and make up your own mind. IMHO until Nokia start getting realistic about their navigation pricing they will have trouble penetrating the market.

Finally I signed up to 120mb free data but Vodafone have now upgraded this to unlimited so I can't see why they would charge extra for data on any GPS.

Cheers
