"USB connected in non-compatible mode"

Hi, I've been trying to connect the N95 to the PC in mass storage mode to load maps but every time I choose to connect that way it says "USB connected in non-compatible mode". It connects fine in both PC Suite and Media Player modes. Has anyone come across this before?

I've recently bought a 4GB Micro SD and thought this might be the issue, but I get the same error when I change back to my old 1GB card (which has previously worked fine in this mode).

I tried a mate's N95 and his connected fine in USB mode so I don't think it's an issue with the drivers or the PC generally.

I'm on v13 Orange FW if that's any use. Any help or advice much appreciated.
Thanks

There are two courses of action here that I can see. Either you reinstall your software or you use a memory card reader for your 4 gig micro sd.

Other than that, I'm not sure what could be causing the issue.

Thanks for the response.

I'm a bit nervous about reinstalling the FW - this is the third time I've installed it, and after the second time the phone was basically bricked for about 5 days before I could get it going long enough to reinstall. It's currently temperamental (restarting itself, crashing etc) but I learnt from that experience that I'd rather have a semi-functioning phone than risk no phone at all. Incidentally Orange were no help at all - despite as good as admitting to me that they're aware of major problems with their software on the N95, they still maintain that the handset is no longer their responsibility after the first 6 months and told me to send it to Nokia. For the same reason I'm reluctant to debrand and void the manufacturer's warranty. I think I'll just wait for Orange to release a new firmware update before I try upgrading again.

Using a memory card reader sounds like a good short term alternative. Thanks for the suggestion.

I believe that it is saying non-compatible because it is using mass storage mode instead of PC Suite. Does it still show the icon in the taskbar with Nokia? Also, are you using the USB cord that came with the phone? It has the Nokia symbol on it.

Yes it is the nokia usb cable.
And yes it does show the PC suite icon in the taskbar, with a small yellow exclamation mark and a balloon pops up with the incompatible message. Also, in PC Suite the window that usually says 'drag and drop content here' has the same incompatible mode message.
I see what you mean though - 'incompatible' meaning incompatible with PC Suite. I hadn't thought of that.
The thing is, when I try to load the nokia map loader, it won't start, saying 'connect phone via USB in mass storage mode', even though it already is. :con?

Confused too... If you eject and unplug it, the n plug it back in, when it asks you for which mode to use, say PC Suite and see if it is now compatible

Make sure you do not unplug the cord without ejecting it from the PC. Not sure if you knew that or not.

I am having trouble with maps too.

Yeah I do know to stop the device before disconnecting it in USB mode.

I have tried what you suggest, and it always works fine when connected in PC Suite mode.

What has occurred to me based on your previous post is that it might be worth trying to connect in USB mode without PC Suite running, so hopefully I won't get the incompatible mode error. Then trying to start map loader on its own without PC Suite confusing it?

Unfortunately I'm at work now without a USB cable but I will try it when I get home.

Thanks again for your help, and waxup. What problem are you having with maps?

Yeah, that should help. Make sure pc suite is not running on your computer (simply left click the icon on the taskbar and exit the application) and then connect your phone via mass storage mode and it should work.

If that doesn't work, remove pc suite from your computer (you can always reinstall it later) and then try again in mass mem mode and it definately should work.

If you can try connecting it to a different USB port (e.g. directly into the back on your computer). It sometimes can be fussy about such things.

thanks for all the help. It worked when I shut down pc suite and connected in data transfer mode. maps loaded fine.

thanks again for the help!

i had the same problem when in data transfer mode i click the Maploader app on Pc suite and it would'nt work, obviously i'm not connected to pc suite but maploader is built in to latest version and can be lauched from there.
the way to do it is dont touch pc suite or even launch it and launch maploader seperatley using the shortcut in the startbar under all programs.

I only had this problem with latest updated PC suite

I just got the phone a couple weeks ago and it came with 6 months of free voice guided navigation. When I try to set it up, it has a lsiting of the prices on no option for the free six-month setup. Also, I downloaded the USA map and the Illinois map and it does not show up in the phone. Maybe I can try reloading it and see what happens. I'm not too worried about that right now though. Hope everything gets squared away. Take care

Ok you're a step ahead of me. I haven't go to the stage of actually using the maps, buying the navigation licences etc yet, that comes next.

Getting the maps on to the phone was the first part, and I think I've done that. Although I see what you mean about the maps not showing up on the phone - the maps app seems exactly the same as it was before I loaded them.

ccraig - that was exactly the problem. It seems pointless and confusing to have a shortcut to map loader in pc suite when you can't load maps while pc suite is running.
