Hello all.
I have a the N95 8GB for a while now and i do have the 20.0.016 firmware.
no matter where I am, if its outdoor in the city or open area, it takes my device's GPS between 10 to 25 minutes (and some times more) to lock.
I'm guessing something is wrong with it, does it take so long for you guys as well ?
Any ideas of how to fix it?, if its abnormal, I mean.
Thank you.
Make sure you have an Internet access point defined in menu | Tools | Settings | Connection | Access points
While still in the Settings app, check also General | Positioning | Positioning methods and ensure that "Assisted GPS" is checked (as well as "Integrated GPS"😉, and that under Positioning server, the Internet access point is selected, and the server address is set to supl.nokia.com.
Make sure in Maps that the Internet access point is also selected in Maps | Options | Tools | Settings | Internet | Default access point

Thank You, I set it all up, the onlt thing I had missing was the default access point.
However, why do I even need to set it up ?, isn't that the idea of GPS, lock on anywhere, no matter if I have internet or not?.
Thank you.

Actually...you are right. I've had N95-8gb for about a week and it came with old 10.<something> version of firmware. I've played with GPS for some time before I upgraded the firmware. I've BLOCKED all internet access for GPS and first time (phone "out of a box"😉 it needed about 5-10 mins to lock on. After that, EVERY TIME, it was really a matter of seconds (around 30 seconds to lock). Now, after I did what I did (upgraded to v20.<something>😉 it needs AT LEAST 5mins. EVERY TIME I start GarminMXT to lock (internet blocked for gps, of course)!!! 😞
A-GPS requires internet access for faster satellite lock-in.
Without A-GPS you have to wait until the phone has detected enough satellites and data from them in order to calculate the position. It is the slowest after a "cold boot" (after you power on the phone and haven't had a satellite lock in a while, and it is the first time you try).

Yes, I understand that, but my point was: firmware v.10.xx.xx was A LOT faster in locking sats (without A-GPS) than f/w v.20.xx.xx is (also without A-GPS)...to the point where it is annoying! 😞

Without A-GPS or Network configured, GPS lock should happen in 2 - 4 minutes.
It's more difficult to achieve a lock if you are moving (driving?) when you start the GPS application. Try launching your GPS app a few minutes before you start the car.
