Any point of N96?

Is their really any point of the N96 in the UK apart from the Micro SD slot and large internal memory. From what i understand the N96 is just an N95 - 8GB but with expandable memory. Because we don't have the capacity in the UK their will be no mobile tv for quite a while so really its not a big upgrade.

Also it lacks the hardware accelerator found in the N95, so really its a step back.

im viewing it as a step back.

It seems to be a stop gap between the N95 and the 9n5-8GB but with the tv as a gunie pig feature for the masses.

The large memory + expansion is what the N95 8GB should have been.

There are a few things, like faster processor and more FPS on recording.

And of course, FP2, which in theory improves batterylife.

Except on my 6220C, it does the opposite.

I dislike FP2 so much that as soon as funds allow Im buying an E66 and going back to FP1.

So, in reality? More storage, supposedly more powerful, and to some, better looking.

I daresay that for most the price difference is really not going to be worth it.

Would have probably had much more success with a new version of the N95 8GB, with a card slot and made it thinner.

The N96 is not "more powerful" (than the N95 8GB). It is less powerful, but with bigger internal memory, bigger display (same resolution), DVB-H (when available), S60 3rd. Ed. FP2.

Nope. Even if you're sure, you're wrong. Sorry. 😉

N96 has "Dual CPU, CPU Type: ARM 9, CPU Clock Rate: 264 MHz" according to http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N96

And N95 has "Dual CPU, CPU Type: ARM 11, CPU Clock Rate: 332 MHz, 3D Graphics HW Accelerator" according to http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N95_8GB

The ARM9 vs. ARM11 is a significant difference, but the N95 8GB clock rate is higher too (except that comparing them across different chipsets is not necessarily any indication), and then on top of that you have the 3D hw accelleration, too.

I definatly saw a higher clock rate than 264. Especially as the 6220C had the same one.

Obviously if that info is correct, then the N95 is beastier.

I wouldnt put it past forum nokia to get it wrong, they certainly have done in the past (and later changed to the correct info). They said the 6220C had an accelerometer too, which it doesnt.

If only I could remember where I saw it 😞

Edit: I was right!

Bloody forum nokia.

http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/6220_classic

CPU:
Single CPU

CPU Type: ARM 11

CPU Clock Rate: 369 MHz

And the N96 definatly had the same at some point, even though its changed now. I know its only single CPU, but for all I know then it was listed as a dual CPU with the same clock.

Lesson being, you cannot trust forum nokia to get specs right until its been launched.

Oh, and they are also the guilty ones for making me think the 6110 had a 650 battery, when its actually 900.

In relations to the N96 supporting DVB-H, does anyone have a clue whether this broadcast format will be supported in the UK, any time soon?

Probably not anytime soon, because as far as I know, no-one is even running any pilots with the technology in the UK yet.

It was accepted as an EU standard this year, though, in case it has any effect.

2010 at the very earliest (in theory), but more likely 2012. Might be an Olympics things.
IIRC its related to spectrum allocation as much as anything. We'll have to wait for the analog switch off.

Indeed. I'm not an expert on this, but my undersanding is that the right sort of spectrum isn't available and probably wont be until anlog TV is switched off. I assume there will then be some re organisation. What's in the 'right' rnage now I dont know.

It doesn't help that the EU wants to specify certain technologies in certain frequences whereas the UK regulator prerfers to let licensees choose what technology to use.

The L-band was auctioned off earlier this year which went to Qualcomm (MediaFLO) IIRC.

the point of the n96 i it updated the range - now all the n-series are in the 'current' style. of metallic sides black front - coloured back.

they all have the new front panel layout that with the extra carosel button

so the line up is complete.

but yes its no jump like the n95 was.

think of it as the iPhone 3g to the iPhone.
a refresh.

if your due an upgrade go for it - if not - don't sweat it.

Not until switchoff in 2012 as their is no spare capacity on the digital platform (Freeview)

Again the N96 is just a minor update to the n95 8GB until the TV feature is enabled.

What i never understood is why nokia never added a Analogue / Digital DVB Tuner receiver to their phones so we didn't have to wait until the mobile standard is launched.

Then again DVB reception is so hit or miss in the UK at the moment until switchover when full power broadcasts are started.

Totally agree with you. Have tried it on both T-Mobile and Vodafone networks.

Pointless. It offers "potential" which in any case will be superceeded by other phones within a few months.
