Hey guys,
I am new to AAS. It seems like a cool site. This is my first time in the forums though. I've read a review or two on the n78 and the n82.
Ive had a few nokias in the past. The most recent being an n75, ive been happier with past 'smart phones' though. Ive had two 6628s, and another similar earlier model before that.
I am looking at a new phone. A Nokia of course.
The two I narrowed down to are the N78 and the N82. I went so far as to called a nokia sales associate to figure out the differences.
heres what I came up with
N78 has:
feature pack 2 (different menu setups?)
slightly larger battery (1200 amp vs. 1050?)
newer styling (i like)
3.2mp camera (versus the 5.0 in the n82)
fm transmitter ( n82 doesnt have?)
and the fact that the n82 does not have 3G capabilites in the USA ( this was kind of a deal breaker for me as I am in the USA 9/12 months of the year... )
have I missed anything?
Some have said they prefer feature pack 1 over feature pack 2? Why?
Thanks in advance
-Arman
Because at the moment, FP1 has many more programs that will run on it.
The N82 does not have an FM transmitter.
I originally bought the N82, but sent it back after I couldnt find one with a good screen (all 5 had a purple tinge which ruined video watching). Eventually gave up and got an N78, which I am happy with (although it still has a slight purple tinge, but not as bad)
I'll list a few extra pros/cons to help you decide
N82 pro's
records video at 30 fps vs n78 15 fps
cover for camera lens
great build quality
software compatibility (although N78 will catch up over time)
auto rotating screen, although didnt always work that well
N82 cons
Screen is dull. They appear to have done this on purpose to make up for the low capacity battery
N78 pro's
FP2 - its not that much different, but has some benefits
faster to use than N82
brighter screen
N78 cons
build quality not as good as N82 - battery cover is slightly loose
Good luck with whatever you choose
Baz
N82 advantages are mainly about the camera in my opinion, but there are some software compatibility issues too. FP2 has is meant to be backwardly compatible, but isn't for everything (e.g. satnav program seem to be impacted). Of course this issue will largely go away over time.
The N78 is marginally smaller.
Its not as easy decision especially given the pricing at the moment (in time the N78 will be cheaper I suspect).
Part 2 of our N78 review will be going live shortly so you may also want to read that.
Just to note - make sure you get the correct variant of the N78 (i.e. with the US bands).
thanks for the quick answers guys...
weird @ those purple tinges... was it like a purple tint?
I got to play with an n82 at the store today... excellent gadge! it seemed like a solid phone, but i didnt see any 'edit' key. a la copy paste and such 😞 😞 i hope theres still a quick way of doing that...
Thanks for the reminder on the bands. I will def look into that. I bet the loose battery cover is something ez to play with myself. Maybe put a very thin adhesive backed fuzzy stuff on the inside part of the battery cover so it wont wiggle around 😊
I hope nokia's internet browser is relatively easy to use...
So certain FP1 programs will not work hmmm? I wonder, is there anyway to get into the n78 and the n96 and load fp1 on there instead? I can def understand why people wanna stay away from change and keep their current fp1 setups. but since i am new to either, and will be starting from scratch with apps, and slowly easing my way into it, i dont think there will be a huge damper on my fp2 app selection...
I will keep my eyes peeled for part two of the n78.
