Hands-on with the Samsung INNOV8

We can make the assumption the CPU will be at least on par with the n95's. It's able to handle video recording at VGA@30FPS and QVGA@120FPS.

I hope the CPU is faster than Nokia's... 400Mhz+ would be a nice boost.

hargs48 wrote:I know this is off-topic but while we mentioning other S60 companies, other than Nokia, when can we expect a review of the LG KT610,the "mini E90".

AAS has yet to test an LG S60 phone, would like to know whats LG's take on S60...:icon14:

Will try a bit harder to get hold of one and let you know. I'm not sure whether this is actually out anywhere yet though.

That sounds reasonable, though of course Mhz is a bit meaningless in many ways. Previously Samsung have OMAP based chips, but that's no guarantee they'be done the same again, especially as it belongs to a new family.

Sucks that not all S60 software works on the Samsung S60 phones, like Nokia Maps & N-Gage.

But it's nice to see that Samsung will include a Route 66 version with the package. Hopefully they will do that with Samsung i7110 too (which is the most gorgeous S60 device I ever seen).

As I see it, the Samsung advantages are the good looks and build of their devices, and that their music player can play ogg vorbis (3rd party app is needed for that on Nokia).

And the Nokia advantages are their own S60 software. Like Nokia Maps and N-Gage and the official S60 MSN application thingy.

Great preview. How do the speakers compare to the N95 speakers? I see you mention the speakers briefly. Thanks

Hi guys,

Steve said in his video preview that he suspects that optical zoom wasn't included because it would make the device too bulky (like the G810?) but is cost really the reason that xenon flash was omitted, even though it was included in the G810)? I did notice, however, that GSM Arena mentioned in their review of the G810 that the xenon flash wasn't too great and that the optical zoom degraded the quality of photos.

A poster in a different thread stated that the Nokia N96 has a hardware H.264 decoder. Is this the case with the i8510 or does it have a software decoder? 7.2Mbps HSDPA support is also impressive. Any idea what processor it uses or whether it has a separate 3D chip?

As this prototype stage, how does the photo quality, flash and the camera start-up and shot-to-shot times compare with the Nokia N82, Nokia N96, SE C905 and the "Japanese handsets" ( http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-c905-camera-en.shtml )? (Thanks for textlad's photo comparisons with the N82). The Mobile-Review comparison with the Canon IXUS 70 standalone is very interesting, although this is slightly concerning: "The smartphone can focus on any object when you are 5 to 7 cm away from it, which is not the best result we've seen even among other cameraphones, let alone dedicated digital cameras...", as is this: "The i8510's camera isn't particularly speedy - it takes around 2-4 seconds to focus and the whole shooting sequence takes roughly 8 seconds (from the moment it starts focusing). For example some smartphones and communicators will let you take two shots during the same times pan, while most digital cameras will focus, process and render all photos almost momentarily." Is the panorama mode based on PanoMan?

This is also of great interest:

"Significant improvements in image quality will come along in 10 Mpix cameras with decent lenses; on the other hand, some of today's solutions, such as the Samsung INNOV8 already offer some of that higher-grade experience. With that said, do Sony Ericsson really have a trump up their sleeve? In fact, they do, but they are going to release it late in the summer of 2009 - the new phone will boast a thorough revamp of hardware and lenses, next generation of Sony's Exmor matrix with a bigger diagonal, and a heftier price tag (around 700-800 Euro at start).

The fact that the C905 is in between these two milestones (5 Mpix and 10 Mpix matrices respectively) will have nothing to do with its mediocre sales. One of the real reasons is that by the end of this year Nokia will put up around six S60-powered imaging-centric phones with comparable image quality and lighter price tags on offer, which will automatically catapult them in the lead, while Sony Ericsson will have to make do with their tiny portfolio."

It's good to see that the phone can be charged via USB. The build quality looks solid and the out-of-the-box software suite seems impressive. As a previous poster said, is the Google Mail app the standard Java version? And I'm not sure whether I can say this here, but surely turning off the platform security using methods detailed in other forums should deem the Nokia Maps, Podcasting app etc. compatibility questions redundant?

Apart from DVB-H, are there any features that the N96 has that the i8510 does not? Also, why is it that the Nokia 5140i has a thermometer and compass yet these modern, feature-packed phones do not?

And, slightly off-topic, but is the reason that Nokia introduce separate NAM variants of their handsets due to the dispute with Qualcomm that has now been resolved? If so, why is it that the i8510 has not included the 850 and 1900 W-CDMA bands, but has included the 900 (what networks is that for?) alongside the 2100? Or am I getting completely confused?

Does any one know if the upcomming Samsung SGH-I8510 INNOV8 will have SIP support?

WOW! sounds like one realllllly impressive piece of phone....now am a Nokia fanboy and a bigger @60 fan (oh...smartphones OS's are wonderous stuff!) but still i think Nokia has been the king on the hill for too long.

Just look at the shoddy quality of it's expensive phones...look at all the complaints about the N95/N95 8Gb, the dead pixel problems etc on the N82...if i am paying out a bomb for such a top notch device, the build quality at least needs to be superior too. Having a competitor should light the fire under Nokia...hopefully...

can't wait to see the review of the Innov8...am not interested much in the N96 but am definetly interested in seeing how this turns out.

Edgar Villegas wrote:Does any one know if the upcomming Samsung SGH-I8510 INNOV8 will have SIP support?

I think it does because it has Fring installed as default. I may be wrong, but I think that means it supports SIP (and VOIP?).

Nice piece of kit tho

I own the G810 and can attest that during a head-to-head comparison of the Nokia N82 and the Samsung G810 using flash, the N82 was clearly the winner. Based on the first picture of comparison between the N82 and the INNOV8, it seems the N82 prevails as well when flash was used. Samsung looks to me hasn't got their flash and camera photos during low light setting correct.

In addition, I tried to install the S60 applications on the G810 and ran into numerous problems. The samsung has about a 70% compability with S60 apps written for Nokia N-series. One of the issue was certificate, eventhough I specifically set the phone not to check for certificate, it still does. My recommendation is, if you want better photos and applications compability, wait for the N85. I expect the N85 to have better photos than the N82 and with OLED it should be much better with battery life.

Bring on the Samsung , Had Nokia 6500 s the worst Nokia ever made 6220 classic had for 1 day and sent back , try replacing the back on it !! Nokia lost the plot had them for 6 years and they have just got worse and worse had 4 replacements for the 6500 been offered N96 wont touch it !! waiting for the Samsung to be sent out . Goodbye Nokia good riddance !!

symbian series 60 did do a higher resolution screen in n80 which would be better than qvga which is pushing it limit on a 2.8 inch screen

so can i not put my own third party apps on this like java games or even put the nokia maps software on there which pretty much free to use besides the "TURN LEFT" aspect.

There are two key things that I'm really interested in. One, as already mentioned by people earlier, is the TV out feature. Though you guys haven't mentioned it specifically, I have a sneaky feeling that it will be present in this phone.
The other thing, which is a rather technical one, is whether it has hardware acceleration which can be utilised by third party applications (read high end games), as in the N95, N82 and the N93. I hope it doesn't disappoint me on this count 😊

does anyone know if you can fast forward video on this phone, i know in the review it says you can do this as you please, but i havent found a way to do it in the past 3 hours of searching

Hey guys.. Tht is one review tht would have made me run to samsung store as soon as I finished reading...but I saw few irregularities (if they are)
Can you clarify one screenshot plz. In the shot the ''camera'' word is cut off. Is this an actual screenshot frm the phone or a shot frm some s60 emulator being run on the pc??? Also there are circles over tools, settings etc in the same screenshot. Does tht show running applications or what???
if all the pics are actual screenshots, thn I would say that the battery drained out pretty fast (...in one noon as you said)...
Plz reply.

if this phone is a standard s60 device and video is playing on real player thn you can fast forward the video by pressing the joystick up (keep pressing for a few seconds as u do in a DVD player with FFW/NEXT key)...opposite for rewind.

why so SLOWLY WORKING GARMIN ?
(in comparison with Nokia N95)

car navigation is critical for many people,
some actions on the way can make delay for tens of seconds for one action or minutes on big picture...

DISGRACE!!! Lead must not loose so much on most serious application.

how to correct this?

Hello,
Do any of you know what type of resolution it is in the camera infront,
the one you use for video calls?
I hope it is VGA, if its not this phone is not complete after my opinion. 😊

i have both of them but the sumsung it's much better the nokia but the battrey of samsung it's the wors eveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer it's work only 6 hours!!! and the nokia more then full day i wish the suamsung start selling new bettery for this mobile.
