Debranding/Unlocking a N95 firmware question

Got a question that I hope someone here can answer.

Gonna be getting another N95 here, but this one may be locked (it's a clearance phone on Orange via Onestopphoneshop). What I want to know is, that if it is still locked, can I change the firmware (debrand it) to one from another region (one with Traditional Chinese on it to be precise) without needing to unlock it? And if I do so, can I still unlock it afterwards when the contract is up?

It will remain using the orange sim anyway, it just need a firmware with Chinese fonts on it, hence the debranding.

Anyone able to lend their advice? Tried a search, but nothing conclusive in the threads.

Thanks guys.

Yeah you'll be fine. Whether the phone is SIM locked to a particular network is irrelevant for the purpose of firmware updates. I did more or less the same thing with my Orange N95 last year, when I updated the firmware to the generic version after changing product code; then few months later I contacted Orange to remove the SIM-lock for 20 when I was going on holiday and wanted to use foreign SIM cards.

One warning about changing to a firmware with Chinese though - you get the Chinese IMEs, but lose predictive texting in English. I flashed my old N70 to the HK firmware just for fun and found this out 😊

Ah, that's great, so long as it can still be unlocked after we unbrand it to a Chinese font firmware. Incidently, do you happen to know which N95 firmware code has Traditional Chinese on it? Would be a great help there. :icon14:
