Reset Generation: The first Mega Game of the new N-Gage platform

All About N-Gage (and its sister-site All About Symbian) is notoriously picky about which games get their coveted "Mega Game" award, with only perhaps two or three titles a year getting it. We're therefore very glad to announce that Nokia's latest title Reset Generation has achieved this accolade, and you can find out how it did it by reading Ewan Spence's in-depth review of the game. This is by AAN's reckoning the best N-Gage game so far, and we recommend it to absolutely everyone. If you haven't tried it yet, head on over to the official website where you can play the full version for free.

Read on in the full article.

I think Reset Gen is taking the same attitude that Nintendo has lately: don't compete on raw processing power, compete with easy-to-play addictive games that play to their platform's strengths.

Something like Asphalt 3 inevitably gets compared to console games, whereas Reset Gen doesn't really have any direct equivalent on other platforms as it was designed for phones from the ground up. It's telling that even the PC version is displayed within a picture of a phone, and uses phone style controls (arrow keys as d-pad, two buttons as soft keys).

Very well done Nokia, very well done RedLynx, this should help restore the N-Gage brand's rather tarnished reputation, especially as anyone with a PC can play the full game for free.

Clearly reset generation is a new generation of (mobile) game. The one thing missing in it is the ability to get out and into the game at arbitrairy moments. Which is a bit much to be asked in a player vs player environment.

Do you mean an "instant play" button on the N-Gage app which takes you straight to an online match rather than a title screen?

If so, that has been suggested on the N-Gage Feedback site, you might want to vote for it:

It's a nice game, no doubt, but I don't see any reason to play it anymore. I played thru the relatively short single player part, and I don't really have any interest in multiplayer gaming (unless it's on the couch infront of the TV with friends playing Guitar Hero, Mario Kart and so on, together).

So for me the game "died" even before it was officially released, since one could play thru the single player part on fileplanet a week before the official release.

I look forward to the day N-Gage get some deep story single player games. Dirk Dagger seems like a good one, although I would prefer to see RPGs instead of adventure games.

If you don't like multiplayer online games, then you won't like multiplayer online games. 😊

Have you tried some of the unofficial N-Gage games like Lament Island, Atlantis Redux and Return To Mysterious Island? They are very plot-heavy, especially Lament Island which has multiple endings.

Agreed and on this point, I find one of the final points in the review a bit unfair. Marking a game down for it's lack of appeal to gamers who are more interested in a different game type.

I really don't enjoy sports games or accurate driving simulations, however a game should be rated on how good the game is for someone who likes that kind of game, not because some people won't like it.

Edit: and plumber is still overpowered 😃 And if you missed my last comment in a previous RG thread, I hope you all get to see the huge demon summoned from the monster box at some point!

To quote frm the AAS 'how we score' page...

For games that receieve 90% or more there is the Mega Game award. This is rarely awarded and any game that gets this should be considered a must for your phone!

So Reset gen wasn;t marked down as such, we're still saying everyone should have a look. If it had a more global appeal, cross genre, then we'd be looking at 91 or 92. FYI only two other N-Gages in total have done a 90+ megagame, and those were Rifts and Pathway to Glory

An instant game button in my quickbar would be nice. but I meant that sometimes you are waiting somewhere and suddenly you have to exit the game. That's no fun at all when you are in the middle of a multiplayer game. So there need to be mobile oriented enticing (multiplayer) games that can start in 10 seconds and exit in 0.2 seconds without a negative impact on you score or friends.

That has been tried on other platforms, for example some Nintendo DS games let you exit from competitive multiplayer without penalty, but people ended up using that as a cheat by exiting whenever they were about to lose. It made it very difficult to defeat people because they left before you won.

There's probably no perfect solution to this, whatever system a game uses would have problems.

Boingboingboing.....Bounce is live!

Thanks for that, whoever you are! I didn't expect them to release it this close to Reset Gen.

I have no problem with the game penalizing players who exit during a multi-player game intentionally. However, there have been several cases where I got disconnected against my will and that hurt my score. One time a phone call came in and that disconnected me from the game. Several other times I guess I just had bad network coverage and it disconnected me two times in a row from different games. Now I don't even want to play the multiplayer unless I'm logged on through my home wifi network. At least then I know I won't be disconnected.

Well, the trouble is how could N-Gage tell when you've been disconnected accidentally or disconnected deliberately?

All that the N-Gage network sees is you disconnecting, it couldn't know whose fault it was.

There's no perfect solution, if people are allowed to disconnect some of them will cheat, but if they're punished for disconnecting then like you say that's unfair on people with unreliable connections.

I think the trick is to not take the whole rankings thing too seriously, I know people get drawn into this way of thinking with many online games and it always sounds as though it spoils their game experience(I've known a couple of people get rid of MarioKart Wii just because their online rankings took a sharp drop due to disconnects).

I try not to worry about my stats, there will always be plenty of losses on there, some might seem unfair(connection drops etc.), some back luck, most due to my poor tactics, I wouldn't let it put you off gaming on the move, this game is so perfect for it.

I love this game, i'ts almost perfect. I think the most important thing to note about it is that it is VERY VERY FUN to play, what every game should be in the end. As a side note, I have never been a fan of strategy games, but I really liked this one. It's even fun when you realize you made a bad move and you are about to get punished because of that. Regards!
