Restoring backup crash/freeze (N95 silver)

4 replies · 5,502 views · Started 09 August 2008

I'm in the process of updating my firmware from 12 to 21 but the backup is not transferring back to the phone.

PC: XP SP2
Nokia PC Suite: v6.81.13.0
Backup size: 33.8MB

Before starting the firmware update, I used the Nokia Content Copier to make a backup of my phone's internal memory (deselected external memory). I then downloaded and installed the new firmware from Nokia Australia, updated the firmware and all went very smoothly. The software on the PC was also updated as part of this process.

With firmware v21 on my phone and all settings back to factory default, I used the Nokia Content Copier to restore my backup. However, the process freezes at 54% (sometimes 53% sometimes 59%). The user files all copy across fine but when the process reaches about 50%, at the 'Full Backup' point, it freezes.

My PC's Task Manager shows Content Copier running between 90-100%, even after leaving it all night.

I've restored factory settings and tried again a few times, but it always freezes at the same point.

I read the following topic and tried some of those suggestions but none have helped.
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/71690/#post373699 Incidentally, Seki suggests copying the contacts, then messages but my version of Content Copier does not allow this. Perhaps things have changed in the software since April 2008.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As has been mentioned many times in these forums DO NOT attemp to restore a Nokia backup after a FW upgrade.
I recommend you now format the internal phone memory to clear out any corruption of the menu system or config... *#7370#

Use PC Suite Synchronisation to backup Contacts, Calendar & Notes
Use PC Suite File Manager to backup any images, sounds or videos in internal memory.

It is not neccessary to backup the memory card as flashing does not overwrite it.

Thanks but I entered the code *#7370# several times prior to creating this thread and it didn't help with the restoration of the backup.

All my SMSs and contacts are within that backup file. How do I get them out?

Unless the restore process offers a choice of "personal data only" then you can't get them back.
If you can find the backup archive file (on memory card, etc.) you may be able to unpack it with WinZIP and see if you can get at the data files and view them in Notepad on your PC.

As I said in my last post, NEVER attempt to restore a backup from a different FW version - as this can result in an unstable handset or disable/hide some features in the menu system.

Hi dez_borders,

Instead of selecting all the files to restore on a single time, why donot you try to restore one by one application at a time like first try to restore only messages, then only contacts, etc., Best of Luck 😊 :icon14:
