E71 - initial thoughts

Well, I have had this phone 2 weeks. Previously a WM and then BB user, it took some convincing for me to use yet another OS but not finding one bad review and wanting a BB type device without having to pay silly money for BES, I went for it.

1) Battery life - shockingly bad. I am a business user admittedly so probably 2 hours calling and constant email and attachment download. Battery doesnt make sunset. Any power saving advice would be good.

2) Capital letters and apostrophies. BB gets this right. Symbian doesnt bother so you have to manually put the apostrophy in don't/won't etc and it doesnt recognise proper nouns (London/Arsenal/Neil).

3) In an email when someone has there telephone number at the bottom, you cant scroll down, highlight and call. You have to memorise the number and then type manually in

4) No spell check on the qwerty input. A real shame

5) No ability to have the phone ring but email on silent

All minor you might say - and you're probably right. But it's always in the detail...

So, disappointment all round. Don't get me wrong - it's a beautifully crafted phone that has amazing intuitive features.

But a BB beater this is not.

you've got some things wrong I'm afraid. The apostraphe works fine. When I type won't all I do is type "wont" and it inserts the symbol just by hitting the space bar. Turn on predictive text. I'm surprised how well it works especially finishing words for me so I don't have to finish the word. Just hit space bar. It gives you a drop down list too.

Inherently there IS spell check, I'm using it to type this post. You really have to turn on predictive and see how well it works. You won't be using the " ' " anymore I promise you that.

I cam select phone nuembers in messages and call it just by highlighting it.

Also it has memorized all my proper words so far with predictive, it adds that word to the auto complete for the next time. So at worst its a one time entry. but I see you want it to capitalize, which it doesn't do. Gotta use the up arrow key first on the bottom left.

The battery I can't say, so far its decent for me.

Cheers. I was hoping to get a response like this.

Turning on predictive text has solved a lot of problems. Should have done that before having a moan!

But - how come you are able to scroll down and highlight a number then dial. I scroll down and the cursor just flashes. Nothing under options either.

As for battery life, give it a few charge cycles to get max capacity. Charge it fully before turning on right out of the box. May also want to do a search on network settings as I know some people in some areas were experiencing shortened battery life due to default settings. Might be some tweaks here that you can make that would help you. Also, hold down the 'home' key to see what applications are running in the background. You might have some applications running in the background that you don't use often that are using battery life needlessly.

I turned off the predictive text too because it frustrated me but so did T9 when it first came out and once I gave it an honest chance it made my life SO much easier/better so I guess that's the least I can do with this new version. I'll give it a go.

i am a T9 fan and i dont like the qwerty keyboard because its much slower compared to T9. and its harder too, T9 only involves 12 keys where this e71 has over 40 keys to deal with. that's just a lot.

I wouldn't be on the phone 2 hours a day, but I used my E71 for roughly 3 full days on 1 charge. That included several calls per day, reasonable amount of internet usage (over 3G), ~30mins GPS usages, a 10min video call, ~30mins music, and bluetooth permanently on & connected to my laptop during work hours.
I have not changed any of the default settings eg powersaver, notification light, light sensor, etc.

i'm getting amazing battery life on my e71. perhaps you have some apps running in the background that are killing your battery.

I decided not to charge my E71 last night because it was still showing 3/4 full after a full day. I wanted to see how much battery life I was getting out of a single charge now that the phone is a week or two old I can probably give an accurate idea since the battery is most likely at full capacity by now. I generally have lots of applications running too. I use the internet (T-Zones) constantly and the browser stays open. When I'm on my motorcycle or at the gym I also use the music player and have a tendency to forget it's on when I get to where I'm going so it continues to play. I have the brightness on the display cranked to 100% as well. I also have an advanced call manager that runs in the background 24/7 plus Bluetooth is also on 24/7. I use an average amount of airtime and my text messages are pretty heavy use and it's not uncommon to have several thousand in a month incoming and outgoing. I don't see two days one a single charge being an issue at all at this point so IMO anyway battery life is amazing on this phone.

For power saving make sure the phone is not searching for wifi all the time and turn off 3g (unless you download attachments regularly).

To have silent email make a new profile and select "None" for the email notification alert.

I hope this helps.

Can anyone tell me if the e71 allows you to hold a key down to capitalise? My old Blackberry used to do that but my current e61i doesn't.

Negative. Some keys have numbers or characters and holding down the key will create that character. The letters w/o these will just create several of that character like a regular computer keyboard would if you held down a key.

You can press & hold the Shift key while typing letters to capitalise - is that what you mean?
