I'd more or less given up reporting on smartphone coverage in Channel 5's Gadget Show (in the UK) because I kept forgetting to watch it, but have just discovered that Channel 5 has put the whole of the last 3 series up on the web for anyone to watch as and when. Of note is the very latest episode, in which the Apple iPhone 3G is pitched against the Nokia E71 in three real world tasks - the result? An honourable draw, but worth a look!

From what I hear, that's Channel 5 in a nutshell. 😊
Then you hear wrong Tzer2, the channel has come a long way in the years since it first launched and they have lots of fine shows. People are just fickle and base a things entire life on a very old first impression.
Of course i too have missed all but 3 Gadget Shows, its such a silly time cos' it comes on during Star Trek on virgin 1 :P and i'm addicted to Captain Picard's adventures.
Interesting results that frankly i expected, but i'd always give the E71 top marks over the cupertino baby.
what really bummed me out off the iPhone was the call quality. At the end of the day a mobile device is still to make calls with and the sound quality of the iPhone is terrible. A mate of mine and I did our own test (he is a macolyte) and both phoned to an iPhone and the recievers voice was tinny and kept on fading away. Too such an extent that even my confirmed Mac fanboy friend had too acknowledge the superiority of the E71. My primary use of the mobile phone is still voice ( about 60% usage) so I just dont have the luxury to compromise on call quality
The show is only available to people in the UK 😞

Right. This is really irritating. I'm considering sending my parents a little always-on proxy server so I can watch these types of things when I'm not in the UK.
I'm surprised that all gadget lovers don't already have VCRs or PVRs to ensure you don't miss such a vital programme 😉
There's a BitTorrent of the episode available here.
Note that a free account for this site is required -- furthermore, it's not technically legal so let your conscience be your guide. 😉
But the Gadget Show ignored the fact that the iPhone does not have a real navigation solution. Even with the latest FW the iPhone GPS seems problematic. Finally, they also ignored the fact that on PAYG the iPhone will probably be twice the price of the E71!
