Hi all,
Just got a new Nokia N95 and I wanted to ask a few questions regarding GPS. Did some reading online and I found out some applications will not work with the internal GPS hardware.
- Which applications will work with the N95 using the internal GPS functionality?
- Which applications will work with the N95 using an external GPS receiver over Bluetooth?
I appreciate any advice given.

All apart from Tomtom will work with the internal GPS now, as far as I know. There might be some niche programs that dont though.
I think all of them support BT recievers also.
Thank you for your reply.
Do you have any examples that work well on this phone?
Copilot 7 live,
Garmin XT,
Route66,
Viewranger,
Sports tracker,
And some others like Navigon. But those above are probably the best examples.
What exactly are you looking for, satnav for the car?

From what I recall when looking, I think that the API that needs to be used to support the internal GPS abstracts the idea of position location to the extent that an application that supports the internal GPS will also support bluetooth GPS automatically.

Thanks for that.
Yes, I am looking for the best possible sat nav setup using my N95.
garmin seems to be one of the best. its certainly my favorite. but many people in the UK dont have good routing experiences with garmin on their n95. for me in the USA it works perfectly.
Hmmmmm... Managed to get a copy of Route 66 Mobile 7 for Symbian series. I have followed the installation instructions exactly and when I restart the phone I see no installer start?
I have copied the system folder to the root of my memory card, also the relevant maps file into the relevant directory, then restarted the phone.
Can anyone please advise?
Where did you get it from?

Put it this way, I didn't buy it. 😊 I have no problem buying a good sat nav application, but I want to find one I am happy with first.
Possibly the version I have is broken? I really like the look of Route 66, can I possibly get an official demo of it anywhere?
I installed a demo version of Viewranger, although I can't work out how to simply enter a UK postcode and navigate to it. Seems a bit complicated!
Route 66 don't do a demo, so no previews I'm afraid.
Both Route 66 and Garmin get good reviews on here (I use Garmin and I'm very pleased), but one thing you should consider is that Garmin XT comes on a memory card and therefore can't be used with an N95 8GB, whereas Route 66 comes on a CD and therefore can be used on any flavour of N95 (I think).
<Rant> On a separate note, the big software developers should sort out a licensing system that prevents copying and allows demo versions with a limited time. Some sort of over-the-air activation when you buy a prodcut that can't be easily broken. Alternatively Symbian should sort this out. We've already lost TomTom and pretty soon we'll lose others if all the software is bootlegged. If you search for help on sat-nav apps, you get pages of hits for illegal downloads. </Rant>
I cannot remember if copilot offer a trial, I think they might, but check their website.
Viewranger isnt traditional satnav, its more for outdoors. It doesnt give directions, its more like a very advanced map and compass. Although for what it does, its fantastic value for money, and an excellent program.
Personally I dont like route66, but personal preferance and all that. I was incredibly happy to get Garmin working on my new phone.
Devonhammer, I completely agree. And there was someone who claimed that they are testing a new version of tomtom on symbian in the E71 section, but oddly enough have not got back to me.
Thanks for all the help so far. Looks like I will give Garmin a try next!
I know this has probably been asked before, so I apologise in advance.. but does anyone know the current state of play with regards to TomTom working with the internal GPS on the N95?
Thanks again.
For all intents and purposes, they are not doing it.
If they are, its being done in secret. Ignore anyone that claims to know different, unless they work for Tomtom, or they can prove it.
There is a hack and 3rd party program that enables it, but its clunky, and requires a way around a activation, so it cannot be discussed on the forums.
tomtom dropped s60 so they wont be making any new version, so they wont be adding support for the internal GPS. just go with a different GPS app.

Wrong on not being able to use Garmin on N-95 8gb. I have it installed on mine and it works just fine. It gets installed to mass memory. Thanks to Roger for helping me with this one.
yeah i have garmin installed on my n95 8GB as well.
Ok I have successfully installed Garmin to my N95 and everything looks great. However... I can't get the internal GPS to actually function at all! Even by using the GPS data option in the phone itself, I can never pickup a GPS signal.
Can anyone explain the procedure for successfully starting the internal GPS?
Thanks.
