I had the non-free Symantec Symbian Antivirus and Firewall for over 2 years. It never saw a "virus".

Because antivirus software relies so heavily on prior detection being reported to the software vendor before a signature can be added to the database and so few owners would have the wherewithall to report any that weren't caught by the software, it probably isn't a good idea.

Better protection would be had by performing a total system backup to another media (say your PC) before installing any foreign or new software.

That way, in case you did introduce a virus/worm/trojan you would be able to reflash and restore your software.

Also be sure to practice safe computing and don't install just any old program you find on the internet--especially ones that are touted as "hacked" or "free".
