Does GPS require Internet all times

Hi

I have been using my TOMTOM on HP IPAQ since quite some times and never required a active internet connection while on drive to use sat nav. It connects directly to the satellite using the inbuilt sat nav.

when I try the same on my E90 then it tells me that 'No active internet connection found'.

Is it mandatory to have a active internet connection while using the GPS of Nokia E90 via GPRS?

nope, I use Tom Tom all teh time on my e90 with no internet connection. If you are talking about nokia maps or google maps then unless you download teh maps first it will download then as it goes.

Thanks, two questions then:

1) where can I buy tomtom for E90?
2) using my home's WLAN, I connected to the Internet and opend Maps by chosing the GPS option from the main menu, it opens the globe and scanned the satellites and displayed my current location that was correct location.

When I went in the car and started switching GPS -> Maps on again, it gives error no Internet connection found. Can't understand why it need s Internet connection and when I first connected it to the WLAN, did it not download the maps.

Pls help.

You canm buy it directly from TomTom website

It only downloads a tiny fraction of teh map teh way you did it. You can install a maps downloader on your PC, download them and sync them to your phone. Then it will work without internet.

One thing of note, teh e90 has what is called A-GPS which is a combination of standard GPS and a small data connection to quickly pinpoint teh phone based on what cell its in. You can use it without teh latter bit but it takes longer to get a 'lock' on teh location.

Thanks for the reply.

I have done it now and the maps are all downloaded. I think the key message that is not mentioned anywhere is the fact that Nokia maps require you to pay a licence fee for an year and buy the navigation.

Before buying the phone I had thought that only voice navigation is paid but visual navigation is free but that's not the case. When I do a plan a route then it connects but asks me to buy the yearly licence to be able to navigate while I drive.
I hope I knew it before...

Is it possible to use nokia maps software using just the built in gps of the e90 without having to use a data connection? (i have preloaded the maps onto my sd card)
