Guys, I just got my P8 today, it came from Singapure and It had a few weird things.
1/ The battery was partially charged. Provider says it's because they did a software upgrade yet it is the R1B software not R1D like they said it would be.
2/Internet browser works, even though I never set it up. I live in New York, so how can this be? on preferences it says. Homepage location:
File:///z:/system/data/browser/startpage/start.html
Wap acct. Preffered
It connects me right to the SE web site and then allows me to browse. I even came to this site. I cannot seem to enter info such as login, name , passwords because the P8 doesn't allow me to write (or I don't now how to) Also, all graphics and so I can see, but the page is so big that it takes me forever to find where I am at. Is this because I'm going to a www and not to a WAP. Is there a way to fix this?.
Everything seems to work fine, but I fear I got a returned unit, and that's why there's a setup. Apparently I have no Email acct. though. I'll try to see how to get one.
Should I return it?
You were browsed offline.
You were browsing a local file.
I don't understand, How can I browse offline?. Don't I have to be online to get to an internet site?

Normal.

So does mine. The phone seems to automatically recogonise your providers settings when you insert the sim card.

Yes, it's because you're browsing the internet. The only way to fix it is to get the Opera browser which has small screen rendering(so you don't need to scroll horisontally). The Opera browser is currently under development for the P800 and will soon be released. It also supports frames, javascript, lets you have multible windows open at the same time, much faster than the built-in browser etc etc.... Check this link for an extensive review on the browser; http://my-symbian.com/uiq/applications/applications.php?fldAuto=53&faq=6
Cheers
Thanks Raven, I also noticed that I have a live WEB CAM SITE, already set up along With SE site. Up to now it offers life stream views of NY and London, and they announce software to connect to your home PC!!
I am wondering wether to exchange the handset for a new one. There's also a very tiny indent or descoloration right above the # Key. It's really a spec of dust but...hell I'm paying 750 for this baby!.
Acording to what Raven said about the Battery being partially charged and the phone automatically recogonises your providers settings is hoenstly totally wrong.
Lemme elaborate why.
I bought my P800 from the United Arab Emirates. Usually Nokia phones and some ericssons are partially charged. I agree, yet the P800 is never partially charged, nor should it " supposedly" recognize ur GSM settings.
The one I bought dropped and broke the first day, so the dealer ( Authorized Sony/Nokia/Samsung Dealer) offered to swap it out and I recieved yet another new in the box P800 which was not partially charged nor automatically recognized your settings.
It seems like you got a Demo phone which the shop uses to s how customers.. or maybe a returned one. Sorry, the truth hurts. Do something about it. Demand a refund or an exchange.
I don't think so! My operators GPRS settings gets recognised by the phone without ANY configurations made. Same thing happened with my 7650. This is normal for some operators. And when the phone is brand new from the factory, it might require half an hour just to start charging. So some times the shops will do the initial charge for you to check that it works properly. This does NOT mean that you've got a demo used unit.
Same here. I bought mine in Holland, was partly charged and GPRS worked without changing any setting. Was really surprised and happy about that last thing 😃
This is the latest Mobilefly reply on this issue:
These are the responses from our supplier.
1) We have contacted our supplier sales director directly and he has informed us that contrary to what one of their customer service officer has told us, the plastic cover was not opened for firmware updates. It was opened as our supplier are required to paste an 'Approved by IDA Singapore' sticker at the back of the phone. When Sony Ericsson Singapore distributes the phones to the various distributors, the handset is sealed without the sticker and hence, in order to paste the sticker on the phone, the staff at our supplier company had to cut open the sealed plastic cover. All phones have to have the sticker before being allowed to be sold in the market.
2)This is normal. When manufacturers do their quality checks, they have to charge the batteries of the phone. After the check is completed, there will be some battery charge left. We have checked all of our other brand new handsets and most have partially charged batteries. You may verify this by contacting Sony Ericsson Singapore directly.
3)Again, the customer service officer who misinformed us about why the plastic cover was opened told us the wrong information.
She told us that the firmware installed was R1D. The current firmware installed in all Sony Ericsson P800 units in Singapore is R1B. You may verify this by contacting Sony Ericsson Singapore directly.
If you have further queries, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you for visiting our online store. Hope you have a pleasant shopping experience.
I do understand their point, except that they did promisse me R1D dofware PRIOR to buying, and the issue concerning the small indents remains. Also, I se no sticker on the back of my phone....Weird
