Upgrading from N95 to.... N82

AAS regular Dirk Snoyt experienced the failure of his beloved Nokia N95 a month ago, as you may remember, following a long road trip. Dirk's now put up a long, interesting and fairly convincing article explaining why he's replaced it with... an N82. The change in form factor, plus smaller screen, is compensated for by the extra RAM, better GPS and Xenon flash.

Read on in the full article.

Hey snoyt,

very well done. Each feature was detailed. It was a good reading. So n85 will also fit in nicely in your pocket!! will you have both your pockets full (with n82 as well) or are you going to keep one free!!!!!

I recently went through the same comparison process as Snoyt. While I agree the N82 beats the N95, I decided the 6220 Classic beats the N82 hands down for much the same reasons. Significantly smaller, lighter, more agile and just all round better, it is an amazing powerhouse of a device, and I think does not get enough recognition on AAS. The N82 is a chunky heavy brick compared to the 6220. Sure, if a slightly bigger screen and wifi are deal-killers for you then go for an N82, otherwise the 6220 easily beats it in all respects.

The 6220 is also much more significant in the wider market place, being a.) cheaper and b.) not marketed as a premium smartphone, but just a more basic mid range handset, even though it is in fact a top of the line smartphone.

As far as I can see it's the best handset in the world right now.

I hope to skip the N85 and go directly to the Touchscreen, OLED, slider qwerty 100mmx50mmx20mm with 6MP camera (upto 640x480 at 60Hz) with xenon flash ;^)

Wifi is pretty important to me. Fast, cheap, unlimited 3G speeds do not exists over here. Wifi is pretty good for watching news, video, uploading, downloading video and and pictures via uPnP, e-mail and Ovi Share. The 20 euros price difference with the N82 is quickly earned back on vacation in roaming costs on the internet, not even talking VOIP. My private landlines run through SIP anyway, I could not imagine a phone without SIP. Using SIP on mobile internet is mostly forbidden by your contract. Besides 3G/GPRS does not always delivers sufficient continuous bandwidth to do VOIP.

Wifi also allows me on protected company-associates networks here and there splattered across the Netherlands. And with 3rd party app SymSMB supporting direct file access to the Windows/Exchange shares of my desktop and servers.

The next is a bit black and white opinion. But in a way the 6220 is a carriers phone. It is there to cash milk customers for 3G/mobile internet costs. To appease the network operators. In that respect it is hard to believe the iPhone has wifi. Then again it is not sold without a big fat databundel anyway....
