Coming back to Symbian (E71) need app advice

12 replies · 10,022 views · Started 03 September 2008

I'm hoping to get an E71 in the next few days, but I'm coming over from Windows Mobile so I need some help with replacing applications...

I use DeveloperOne CodeWallet for securing sensitive data (passwords etc). They don't appear to do a Symbian version, so I need recommendations for a "wallet" application that will allow me to import data from CSV files.

I've been using CoPilot for SatNav, but again there's no Symbian version.
I need spoken directions, and on-screen turn indicators etc. and I prefer on-device maps (not download as I travel) and to buy it once (not pay annually).
Is Nokia Maps or Garmin XT any good?
I can't even tell if Garmin XT works on the E71 (their site is playing up)
Is there something better?

Those are my 2 most crucial apps, so any help would be appreciated

1. Not sure about CSV import, but the ones to check are Handy Safe and SplashID
2. CoPilot does have a Symbian version...
3. Garmin XT has got some decent reviews (not seen any specific comments on E71 compatibility). Nokia Maps 2.0 is OK (view vary on this), but does require subscription for turn by turn directions.

Im using Garmin XT on my E71 and has worked very well so far.

Nokia maps shows promise but its not quite up to giving me full confidence in relying on it in its current state. My experience using address/post code searche functions has not been the best. If it performed as well as the google maps software in searching its database then I would consider using it.

Good luck.

Quick update...

Apparently SplashID doesn't support the E71 (amongst others) so I'm going to trial Handy Safe

At the moment, these devices are NOT compatible until we update SplashID:

N78, N95, N96, N98, E50, E51, E66, E71, E90, 6110, 6120, 6220

On SatNav I've discovered that CoPilot doesn't work properly on the E71 - you can't select a map region, voice or language.

CoPilot support have been VERY good so far, trying to help me get it working, but so far no luck

i dont know about the first one.

but as for GPS navigation, its generally known that garmin is the best solution for all s60 handsets. tomtom is very popular but it does not support the internal GPS chips of any s60 phone. so garmin has the best interface, and it stores the maps locally on the memory card. its routing has always been very good for me. and ever since i upgraded to the 2009 maps, the app has been spot on accurate for everything in my area. my area is a super fast growing area so its been hard for these mapping companies to keep up with businesses and addresses in my area. but its been 100% accurate with the 2009 maps. anyway, garmin is definitely probably the best GPS solution for the e71 and any s60 handset. of course other people have their favorite, but on average the majority prefer garmin for its good looking interface and functionality. i've read a few times that people in the UK dont like the routing of garmin. but people in the USA have great experience with garmin's routing.

What I dont like about Garmin is that (I've heard) that you have to use THEIR memory card - you can't copy the files to your own, bigger card and run it from there

Can you confirm that?

That's not true but you have to use the hack to run garmin on your own memory card. I purchased the app to do the right thing then I got the hack for it to run it on my n95 8gb which doesn't even have a memory card.

Well dont know exactly about Maps but am sure that There is CoPilot and it can be ordered and they send u a microSD card include the software.
About the security applications:
1.Handy Safe is the best for me even its the most expensive 49.99$...u can synchorize it with Handy Desk top (same as Handy safe for PC) and u can call, open URL and more functions inside the application.
2.Best Safe..the software isnt Eye Candy and slow.

OK, story so far

Getting nowhere with CoPilot, which is a shame. Going to look at Garmin and see what else is around for the UK

Handy Safe is great because it imports from Code Wallet (which I already have set up) amongst others. The downside is that it only lets you have one level of folders, and as far as I can see you can only have ONE wallet!

If u want a security software like Handy Safe with infinty subfolders and really cool user interface the go for (XSafe)..i dont know whats the company name but its the same as Media safe company...but am not sure about PC synchorization or Import nor compatibility.

Thanks for the tip, but XSafe doesn't have a "PC Companion" app and I need to import/update loads of details (which will take me ages by hand on the phone)

I'm just trying the Handy Safe sync, and if that works then I'll go for Handy Safe...

For the navigation sw, try Sygic McGuider. It works with the internal antenna, it has maps on the SD card and you pay it once forever.

Bye
