3D HW Acceleration : N95 8gb/N96.

Hey Guys,

I am just debating either to get a N95 8gb or N96...

Im fairly sure on the N96 except for one thing...The lack of a 3d chip like the N95's have. I saw this vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M-xcn5hcNI) and the framerate is really terrible...

Anyway, My question is ,Has any software actually used the 3d chip in the N95 yet ? As Global Racing isint for the N95 anyway...

Thanks,
Barry.

Not much recently. Banjo Nitro Kart does and looks and plays well. The Quake and Quake 2 ports look nice but aren't very playable (due to the controls).

An upcoming update to the n-gage SDK is supposed to add support for 3d acceleration, but with so few handsets supporting it, it may not be worthwhile for developers to use it.

I would say that it would make porting games between devices easier (iPhone and Android both support the same API, although Android doesn't require a 3d accelerator afaik), but if developers also have to support non-accelerated devices, that won't be the case.

Global racing is for the N95 (hence why you saw the youtube video) and yes, there are a few others too including FIFA 07/08 and some demos/benchmarks.

Quite interesting though - there is an argument whether or not System Rush Ngage is accelerated. Many people say it is not, but from what I have seen (by pausing the screens) the shading and effects are not software..

As I have said before - OpenGL on the phone can be used for 2D effects as well as 3D. Should be used on the main OS just like Iphone uses it for the eye candy..

http://www.glbenchmark.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=glpro&showhide=true&D1=Nokia N95&D2=Apple iPhone

Shows N95 being extremely strong in 3D as a direct comparison to the iphone.

Well, the developer (ideaworks3D) does advertise "world-beating 3D and 2D graphics across all devices - both with or without hardware graphics acceleration" and "World's fastest 3D mobile software renderer":

You'd probably need to compare 2 screenshots with/without acceleration.

I thought that the general concensus was that the System Rush demo was 3D accelerated, the full game wasn't.

I thought that Global Race wasn't actually designed for the N95, as it had the speedometer in a terrible place that blocked the screen. It looked much better on the wide display of the E90 where it didn't hide all the action!

But yes, it did work on the N95 and I think someone modified it to move/remove the speedometer (I never tried that version).
