Dust inside the screen!

26 replies · 12,182 views · Started 19 September 2008

Only had my i8510 for a week and already (in sunlight, due to the reflective nature of the screen) you can clearly see plenty of dust getting inside, and its not been dropped once, or anywhere particularly dusty 😞

I dont want to be opening the thing at all (let alone every few weeks) to remove the build up of dust, with a top of the range phone (or any phone) it shouldnt happen.

Anyone else getting this?

A few other people are reporting this issue on other forums.

Luckily I haven't had this problem on mine yet, but it is definitely something you shouldn't have to put up with on a premium handset.

Its only noticable outdoors, its impossible to see inside. For now anyway. Do you reckon it would be possible to exchange it before the problem can develop more?

I would consider it grounds to replace the handset... I can't comment on whether CPW (or whoever) would agree though

When you slide the slider up and look down the back you can see a hole in the back of the screen section. I never noticed but I already have dust in mine. I really don't see Carphone Whorehouse replacing it because it has dust in it. And I don't see any way you could 100% cure the problem. Things like this used to bother me but I don't worry anymore. As long as the handset works (and there isn't TOO much dust - even I have a limit) I'll live with it.

Yes, just spotted that "hole" too. It looks almost like there should be something blocking the hole...

Chaps... best way to avoid this currently is obviously going to be to try to keep the phone (especially the top of it) in a dust free environment... like, if you keep your phone in your pocket, keep it in a low dust "sock" cover. (I stole the one of my SE W960, it fits perfectly)

Hey Stu was the w960 cover a silicone one? I'm planning on getting something to minimise the dust that I've just noticed for the first time.

had the exact same problem on my i8510. it got really bad within less than 2 weeks. took the phone to CPW and asked them to exchange. first branch werent too helpful. went to main branch in town centre and exchanged straight away.
i argued it was not fit for purpose as i couldnt use it in daylight correctly.

my replacement one has done exactly the same. thats going back tomorrow night.
to say it is a premium phone the build design seems to leave little to the imagination.

Can anyone tell me how to get mine apart to sort this out? I too am not well pleased with this and once I can get it apart, will be covering the hole myself!
Bit of a poor show from samsung I think....

I also have this problem and the phone is less than a week old... i was considering swapping it for a N96, but ive not been reading terribly good reviews of it, so i will probably just get this swapped out at carphone warehouse..

You can cover the hole without taking the phone apart. Just slide a small piece of tape down and stick it over the hole. The only thing is, why did Samsung put the hole there and would covering it over cause problems? I know it's unlikely (it's not like covering a hard drive breathe hole) but you never know!

Taking the phone apart is definitely going to void your warranty so is it really worth it? I'd take it back and get something else. I've noticed more dust in mine already and it seems to be on 2 different levels but again I can only see it in sunlight and it doesn't affect my view of the screen when using it normally.

When I got this phone I was impressed with the build quality. When compared to my N95 it's in a different league (no tap tap tap noise when using the keypad with the slider up). However, I never had dust in the screen on the N95, mainly I think because the screen was right at the front (if that makes sense), i.e. there isn't a clear front in front of the lcd so there's nowhere for the dust to get trapped (and there's no way it could actually get inside the lcd). It's obvious to me that the dust is getting in the 8510 through the hole at the back and the mesh covered earpiece hole but again I don't see any way to cure the problem 100%.

Well ive tried two CPWs now and they are being @rsey.. both insisting i should take it to a service centre and get a protective cover for it 🙄 - will try a couple more and then worst case ill cancel the contract..

I'm sure I remember reading about a technique back in the N80 days which involved using a vacuum cleaner or some other gentler suction device (drinking straw perhaps?) to literally suck the dust out from behind the screen.

Given that we've established there's a nice semi-accessible hole through which to apply suction, I wonder if this might be the least destructive method of managing dust under the screen. On the other hand, I have no idea how sensitive or fragile the components are under there, so I wouldn't advise hooking it straight up to a Dyson...

Fortunately for me I haven't accumulated any dust under the screen yet, otherwise I would try this and post back the results.

I have the phone for a little over a week now and have not noticed any dust under the screen but i did notice the blow hole 😉
I bought a nice little sack from Nokia to put the phone in. I hope that helps keeing the dust away.

That hole is BEHIND the screen, and while I don't doubt that's where the dust is getting in, that looks very much like a breater hole for the backlight on the screen (have a look with the screen displaying black (off) - the backlight is still visible through the hole.

So... if you cover it with tape, keep a careful eye / hand on the warmth of the phone!

i can't get dust from mine out 😞.. is there any other way of getting them out coz its kinda annoying.. i've tried almost everything to get it out without success. mines mostly along the right side. arrgg

Mines like that. Seems to be mostly from top right corner now some is starting to get in from the top left.

I took a closer look and I see a cable connected to that hole.

I've bough this phone on 2 october and within 1 day I already have dust under the screen. On the top right corner (I barely touched the phone) with a price tag of €579,00 (which I've fully paid, not sh!t from a provider) I can say it's not some toy phone.

As of today (7 oct) I've swapped the phone for a new one.
Also there is something that does bother me.
When you're doing something and swap back to the menu you'll see a dotted circle.
I know when I open/start a folder/app there will be a rotating ring.
Does that dotted circle rotate?

The dotted circle means that that application is running in the background, or an app (or many apps) in that folder is running.

I have had this phone for about 2 weeks now and the amount of dust under the screen is a joke. Looking at pictures on the device is a chore, I even have a small hair behind the screen. Does anybody know where you stand when it comes to warranty's on a problem like this. It is surely having an effect of the usability of the device?

Mines terrible now. The only reason I havent tried to have it replaced is because any replacement will have exactly the same problem.

I still haven't seen this problem, and Samsung wouldn't be drawn on the issue at the Smartphone Show (basically saying they didn't know about the problem). If you drop them an email or phone them, I'm sure they'll put you in touch with a service centre who will be able to fix the problem for you.

I am surprised, I have this problem also but its not too serious at the moment. I hope it does not get too serious either! I also have not gone back to CPW with this issue because a replacement would certainly have the same problem.

Fantastic phone though, it has to be said

Hey guys!!

I have the same problem.
My i8510 is with a lot of Dust inside the screen. :/

Waiting for a solution for it.

Only solution is replacement really, and hope that it doesnt have same problem, which it probably will 😞
