Texting issue...

I'm having problems texting on my i8510. which is immesnely annoying because its a basic function that any mobile should be able to do well!

I am having problems with missed key presses. I type text messages very quickly, using predictive text. After typing a standard message I will have to go back through the message and correct at least 5 of the words, because one of the letters will have been missed! Its a problem with the speed at which I type. For example, "Hi" often appears as I, and other similar problems occur on "home/good/gone", where only 2 or 3 of the letters will appear.

It also happens on words that have multiple numbers in their makeup, so its not to do with the button not having fully depressed.

I am convinced its a software problem, because I get the feedback of the key press when typing. The phone does appear to be slightly slow in a number of other aspects in its general use, slower even that my N95.

Is anyone else having this problem while texting? And does anyone think this is something that will be fixed in a later firmware release?

Other than that this phone has been fantastic, but as i said, its a fairly fundamental problem and its making me give serious though to having to give it up 😞 :frown: 😞

Im having exactly the same problem.
Hopefully updating the software will be easy but there is no update server predifined. If someone knows the URL that would be great.

There's two things to consider here... first of all, which memory location are you storing your texts in? If you use the phone's E: drive, messaging is considerably slower than using the phone's C: drive. Secondly, there is quite a long lag from clicking reply > via text message to being able to type - I usually find the phone misses the first character or two as I start to type too quickly.

I can't say I've had it miss characters after this though... do you have many other apps open at the same time?

The memory in use is the C: drive, so thats not the cause. It also makes no difference how many apps I have open (none or many). Generally, I leave nothing running in the background at all, so my phon can have the maximum amount of RAM possible and it still happens.

I'm not referring to just the first key presses either sadly, it happens throughout the entire message. I have tried to recreate it on my N95 and cannot . I don't even remember it ever doing it on my N95, even in the earlier firmware versions when the rest of the phone was painfully slow and RAM was virtually none-existent.

Try and recreate it:
Press 4 then 8 instantly after, in predictive text mode. Instead of getting "it", i get "i". I have to actively think and tell myself to type slower or I end up with a message of complete nonesense.

Getting quite depressing now, I don't understand how such a top of the line phone can have such a fundamental flaw with it (-_-)...at least with my N95 both the key functions (calling/messaging) worked from the off.

thanks for confirming its not just me! Looking at the replies you've had on that website you seem to be having the same problem as me. It seems no one understands 😞...:

a) It never used to happen on my n95, so its not the way in which im typing (i.e. its not because I am pressing two buttons at the same time)

b) its not when the messaging app has just loaded, as it could be the last word i type.

c) its not happening when the message is 3 textxs long, it happens on text messages of all sizes

d) its not a RAM issue as all other applications can be closed and it still happens.

e) its not because of the place my messages are being stored, because thats on the C drive

f) I do text quickly, but surely if my N95, which had 18MB of spare RAM, could cope with my fingers, then this supposeduly superior offering from Samsung should do the same...

I'm tempted to contact Samsung support, see if they can confirm/deny whether this is a recognised problem on a small number of handsets or whether they know nothing about it.

Foxhunt, if you contact CPW can you let me know the outcome? Also, if you have access to another i8510 can you try texting on that, to see if its just your phone or it is a problem because of how quick you text? I don't have access to another i8510, as my mates are all way behind the times!

OK, it seems a few people are having problems here, so it's something to ask Samsung to look into.

However, remember this phone is on it's first firmware release and is very new to market. It will take Samsung a little while to get all the bugs and niggles out of the firmware. (don't forget, it took Nokia a year to make the N95 usable)

Thanks Stu, I'd be forever in your debt if you can get it looked at/fixed...

I understand its brand new, the firmware will improve it over time, and the N95 was just about useless as a "smart"phone on release, so I'm content for now.

Having said that, I may lose my mind having to type text messages at such an abnormally slow rate for the next 18months! 😊

What I don't get (and it may be my incompetence), is that I can type as fast as possible and the phone doesn't miss any characters.

Which firmware do you have? HH6 or HH7?

Are you typing with two thumbs? I can't recreate it typing with a single thumb, but that gives me serious RSI in the one thumb i use, and it takes ages to text a message... 😊

I have HH7, with a custom version date of 20/08/08... (its the 8 gig version)

I don't have access to another i8510 to see if its me or my phone 😞

I tend to use fingers rather than thumbs, but my texting speed is not slow, and I can go faster on this phone than on my N95, all without it missing a character (other than the annoying initial lag)

Funnily enough, the initial lag doesn't bother me too much... I had approx 3000 messages in my n95 inbox so opening and closing messages took ages on that.

However, I'm beginning to think its my phone, as it appears to be generally slower than my newly reformatted N95... Just a few examples of how my i8510 appears to suffer from delays:

The loading circle appears in the top right corner for nearly two seconds before displaying the version screen (after typing *#0000#)...

If I search for a name in my contacts, then press the call button I get a delay of a second. It will then reload the contacts screen, without the search term, then it will begin dialling the user. Probably takes 2 seconds in total from me pressing the call button to it actually calling the person.

I appreciate this is an early firmware release, so these things will probably improve in time, but can anyone else confirm whether they experience similar delays with general functions? If not then I think it could be a factory reset is in order...

I have EXACTLY the same issues with regards to contacts, and, now that i try it, also a delay with the *#0000# thing. I thought it was just me. I contacted CPW who said they would probably be happy to replace the phone when it comes back into stock, and i think i'll give them a ring on monday.

Oh and my firmware version is HH6, and the custom version is L26xeuhh6.

I also have this issue.. i type two handed normally and it either misses characters completely or pauses.. ive got firmware HH7

Just a random update on this thread... ive since done a factory reset on the phone (the *#7370# way) and the texting is now fine :con?

Hmm, may have to try that, but can't see it fixing it. I think its the fact that the buttons aren't individual, it seems to cause problems on all phones :\

ive noticed on mine that the 4 key doesnt work when pressed, you can feel button working but have to press it a tiny bit harder than the others, could this be the problem.everything else works great so im thinking ill just live with it instead of trying for a replacemnent and getting a dud un
