I have today taken delivery of the new N96, i was eagerly awaiting the delivery thinking the phone would be brilliant.
either i have been sent a duffer or this really is a poor phone.
the pre loaded videos when played are jerky to say the least, the navigation around the menu's is slow and the general feel is low quality.
before you all question my phone history, i have been a happy owner of the N95 for 18 months with a few glithes sorted by firmware upgrades.
I am totally dissappointed with the N96 and the fact that mobile TV will not work in the UK makes it worse!
I am now going to send the phone back and ponder which phone to upgrade to next??
I have had nokia phones for years however i now think that a change maybe in order, i am considering waiting for the either of these 3, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Samsung i8510 Primera or the HTC Touch Diamond
The N96 does have a firmeware update, but unsure for what product codes yet.
If your that unhappy with it, return it and wait for the N85.
Sounds like you have a duff phone, mines is alot faster than my N95 ever was. Video playback is smooth, no complaints of any kind so far here.
After the first boot, wait for a few minutes until the device has scanned all content and updated its databases. If you use it heavily during this process, it is more likely to have problems like jerky video. After the databases are all updated, it should be fine.
Also, consider updating to the new firmware. See http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/8152_The_N96_gets_its_first_update.php
I've found video playback of the preloaded videos to be fine.
and even iplayer to be ok.
though i was getting some jerkyness this morning when i had video player/web brower /music player and messenging all running - so i had to close the web browser to get it working smoothly.
I have had several crashes - all while syncing imap email.
Im assuming the firmware update will fix this.

one thing that does worry me is how easily scratched the front face is.

I also experienced numerous crashes, and playback of the HD videos that came preloaded with the phone is also very erratic. The 'Top Gear' show, which I think is 300Mb-approx, does eventually calm down if you give it a couple of mins to run.
Regarding mobile TV, T-Mobile did advise me I couldn't use it yet because of 'licensing issues.'
