Sorry, perhaps by description of WN menu's was a little wrong. WM is as easy to use as any other mobile OS, just its windows, hence imagine what its like changing options on your PC! It uses lots of check boxes etc.
Although from what you've described so far, if the camera is not such a big point, then perhaps the iPhone is your best option. The only phone I can think of that will be similar (well better, but same form factor) is the HTC Touch HD.
Search YouTube.com for touch flow 3d, or something like HTC Touch Pro (Pro not diamond as the pro has a better Touch Flow 3D interface) for demo's!
bartmanekul - that sounds like a great idea. Specially now with so many similar specced phones around, getting a chance to trial different phones is just whats needed. And seeing as I like to change my phone nearly every 6 months, would probably save me a fortune!
bartmanekul - that would be a very useful service. Possibly one way you could 'insure' is to take credit card details? I don't know much about it but isn't that what they do with car rentals? So if they don't return it or return it damaged, you charge the card.
Certainly I think a lot of people would be prepared to pay e.g. 10+ each a week to test drive a few devices.
Mmm, I wonder if theres enough call for it?
Sadly the card details thing doesnt work. AFAIK, theres no way of properly checking, Im sure the car people have different methods. How many of you would be willing to put up the device's value up front first?
Anyway, the only thing you can do in a situation like this is see if you can get hold of one, perhaps from a friend. Or just go into a phone shop, and pretend your thinking of buying one (which is true, just not from them).
I think there would be plenty of demand (especially if you marketed well - imagine reading a smart phone review, then seeing at the bottom "try this device for a week at www.phonetrials.com" - would be popular), but I'm not sure many would be willing to put the value of the device up front - it's too much of a risk with such a fragile thing, you'd be afraid of dropping it and being charged 500.
adz07 - thanks I'll check out the Touch HD videos. To be honest I've never had a problem with Windows on the PC, so maybe I'll be ok with it.
Agree with mstruve on the deposit, I'd be more inclinded just to buy the device that rent if I had the finances for the deposit in the first place. I guess you'd have some sort of signed contact in place anyway?
Yeah, but there is simply no way of stopping someone walking off with one (or rather, not sending it back). Some of these scammers are very clever, and use false/other details which can check out ok. So you either end up chasing a ghost, or someone whom had nothing to do with it.
If I could figure out that hurdle, I'd probably start it up
I also have been looking around the N96 doesnt really do it for me, dialaphone are offering it free on their Anytime 700 + Unlimited Landline + 250 Text 18 month contract but I want something different.
I have been considering the xperia x1 should have been released 30th Sep yet nobody can get hold of it, apparently it keeps getting put back because of software probs & its a WM phone . I have always had symbian phones and was quite looking forward to the X1 but sony ericsson seem to be blaming the operating system ,so now I dont know what to do

When was the last time you checked into a hotel??
Many, many years ago (dont have enough fingers or toes to count on) 😉
Fair enough! The point is that they take a swipe of your card on arrival, and if you fail to pay the bill they can still charge your card after you've gone.
I think you've got a great idea there. In the same way that more people lease a car these days, even privately, it means that we can always be using the latest phone!
I say go for it 😉
There is a way of "reserving" funds on a credit card. Thats actually what Hotels do, they reserve money on your card for how much they estimate your bill to be. Then if you run off without paying they just authorise that payment. Im sure this could be done for rentals, but I guess the credit card companies would know more!
That would almost be like putting the cash up front then wouldn't it? Phones are so fragile that you'd be worried about dropping/losing it and being charged the full price to your card.
I agree it's a great idea in theory though, and I'm sure there's a way of getting round these problems which would probably just be a matter of insurance.
Food for thought, thanks people. Might look into it. I am certain that theres a market for it, thats not the worry. Worries are, outlay for the devices, cost of setting up a website (cant do it myself), and making sure theres reasonable protection of the devices.
Maybe I can find a website to partner with 😊
- After much deliberation..
- I may yet get the N96 or Samsung i8510 but for now I've gone with the N85.
Will drop the odd comment on how its going compared to the N95-1 I still have.
Please do, a lot of N95 owners want to know how it compares.
And when you get it, can you check how big the gap is between the slider when its shut? Some are reporting this as a problem.
What we need is a 5800 with a 5mp camera and Xenon flash.
Give it USB charging (with a port on the bottom) (Nokia designers are such twats sometimes) and the N95 Video Editing Capabilities and you have something that's starting to be special.
Give it a nice amount of ram ( the battery is already fairly decent ) an OLED screen and a boost to the Internal Storage. Sadly I doubt anything like this is going to hit before mid 2009.
Absoloutly spot on, I have been thinking that.
And even when (bound to) the touchscreen N series is released with a 5mp cam, it wont have a lens cover.
I really want a lens cover, missing out the picture quality debate, I like it simply for the ease of starting up the camera.
Well yes. hopefully with the compact one on the N85 they wont be releasing any non protected shutters 😊
My last 4 upgrades have all been no brainers but this one is a real pain !
I can upgrade in a week. Nothing wrong with my N95 and I've been very happy with it.
Ideal additions would be:
A lot more space for music/video (N96 offering perhaps 48Gb looks excellent)
Better gps reception
FM Transmitter
Touch Screen
Better battery life
Compatibility with my existing symbian apps.
No downgrades from the N95
There's nothing offering all of those things right now although I guess the N85 comes closest.
It's therefore tempting to just stick with the N95 for now and decrease my line rental and the only reason I'm tempted to upgrade on a new 12 month contract is that I don't see anything that will fit the bill coming along during that timeframe anyway.
I'm torn !
Just got it out of the box .. ex http://www.plemix.com .. for 350 pounds all up
Its a solid build - I have the brown one .. the screen protector was pre-installed by plemix ..
When you first turn it on you see the Hand-hold graphic the colours are just stunning .. you'd swear this was a VGA or better resolution device .. I might just accept the QVGA for now this OLED screen is just beautiful.
First couple of things for me to do were switch Navi-wheel ON .. its off by default .. bizarre that. Turn off sounds .. co-workers don't need the annoyance factor 😊
Checked the quality of the camera - the dual-LED flash might be ok - I'd prefer xenon but its quite a bright flash from the two LEDs.
Then I've decided to charge it up while getting on with work.
will have more of a play and update later.
350? Whats the catch? I assume it comes from Singapore or somewhere.
And therefore might be subject to import fees.
Can you tell us what product code it has?
I played a little bit with all the latest smartphones and I tell you guys -
IF UNSURE, WAIT FOR THE 5800!
It's a truly great phone and bring so much fresh air to symbian world. The screen is amazing, it has all the n95 advantages plus more. And it's gonna be so amazingly cheap!
N85 is a great dissapointment for me, I text/email a lot and the keypad on N85 is just horrible!!! N95 is so much better.
And as much as I never expected to be happy without a real keypad, the full screen qwerty on 5800 is so good to type on.
As much as Id like to, it has the following drawbacks -
Cam is not 5mp, and worse, no lens cover.
Its Symbian V5, which Im sure is very nice, but I want to wait for a while till most the apps I use are compatible. And this will take quite a while I suspect since its touch screen.
Its a big screen, which is not a boon for everyone. I try to avoid touchscreens since my phones can get punishment. A large touchscreen like that is asking for trouble with me.
I am so much quicker on a proper keypad.
Its not out *now* 😉
When all is said and done, if I have spare cash (unlikely) I'll get one and give it a go.
Got an uberfast response from plexis:
