Is Comes With Music The Worst Idea In The World?

All you can listen to, including Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell! Comes With Music is here and it's time to bring out the Cassandras and explain why it's such a bad idea. We don't have any Cassandra's to hand though, so Ewan will have to suffice.

Read on in the full article.

i actually think CWM is a great idea and i will take full advantage of it on 5800 when it launch's on it ,
only downside is DRM but we'll beable to move our music to a new device some how i read yesterday, i just hope it's easier than the current system they have in place on n-gage for moving games b/c if it's like that it can be a nightmare

CWM is fine for it's market.

For me I already have an extensive music collection and do not want to pay a premium for a handset that would come with music low grade versions of stuff I already own.

I don't want to buy software and services off Nokia. I want them to make decent hardware. CWM is basically a feature to attract a customer to a Nokia handset and away from a competitors unit. In the good old days Nokia used to do this by making a better phone. Is it so much cheaper to buy music rights than it is to develop decent hardware? When I buy a TV I don't go for a make that has its own channels or shows - I go for a make that I trust and that produces a quality TV in my price band.

DRM? no thank you.
I upgrade my phone 3-4 times per year.
This is simply not what I want as a consumer. YMMV

Ironically I'm not the type to "share" my music collection, but I'm being forced towards the Russian sites because I just cant find the sources in the UK.

This is another example of the "we own you" mentality. They need to find another way before they'll get me using these sorts of services.

Ermmm...just to clarify something here - no one is solely limited to playing music on their 5800 (etc etc) from Comes With Music. Music files from pretty much any other source will play on it too - and with FAR FAR more choice than the limited, locked down, hype-ridden iTunes/iPhone system. Lets get a bit of sanity here and cut through all the crap.

What's more on S60 you can install 3rd party players that play even more formats than standard S60. Which is NOT something you can do on poor old iPhone, where Apple will deny access to the AppStore for any app that it randomly feels like blocking (music players guaranteed).

There are LOADS of legitimate MP3 buying/download sites out there, offering VAST VAST VAST choice beyond Comes With Music, ALL of which you can play on your 5800 (etc etc).

So quit this nonsensical whinging!

yep CWM is ideal for 5310/5800 users
they are transient and it can be part of their 'allowance' id rather pay 8 quid a month than 10quid a cd for my kids - esp as music is often of the moment - you listen to it for a few months then never again. as long as you keep on cwm you have unlimited access.

then theres things like last.fm - which im sure will have a nice s60 5th edition app in the works.

no one has to sub to comes with music - but its a good option for alot of people.

interestingly its only 46 more to get the N95 8gb comes with music
on nokia.co.uk - its 399 vs 353 for the regular one.

at 150 less than the N96 its looks good value!!

Why don't you try and understand what people are saying rather than just writing it off as 'nonsensical whinging'?
The point is that one pays for this service with the phone. Why would I want to pay for something I don't want? Furthermore why pay a premium for music and then buy it elsewhere?
I don't believe, in this discussion, anyone has compared it to the Apple model so why don't you stop all the nonsensical Apple whinging and cut out all the crap?

The way I understand it, you have to pay extra for "Comes with Music" (around 100). It's not included in the price of the phone. So, if you don't want it, don't buy it.

@Brendan: Ha ha, you're a funny man! Seems like you haven't followed your own advice and attempted to understand what I am saying. As the response above mine says, you don't have to get CWM. It's a great option though for those that do want it and great value, IMHO. My point was that it's competing with iTunes (which I think you'll find the article mentions - did you actually read it by the way?) and as this is a mobile context, with iPhone, hence the comparison. Please get a clue before writing anything more...

thanks for the clarification.

@ajack, I am glad you enjoyed my post. I did read the article and noted that it drew loose comparisons between the itunes store and CWM - i did not notice any mention of the iphone which you so vilified. Maybe I was unable to understand your point due to all the hyperbole in your post.
