Hi
I've been waiting anxiously for the N96 and now I am reading so many damning reviews of it being slow, buggy (to be expected with 1st release f/w) and, well just not up to the hype.
I then saw that an N85 was due shortly and thought it may be a better proposition and now the 5800 XpressMusic touch screen is due out late 2008/early 2009 in Europe and to be honest it doesn't look bad but I am unsure of the OS v9.4 5th edition. Will this version be compatible with TomTom and Garmin Mobile XT I wonder?
Feel free to pitch in and say what you think.
Cheers.

I would guess that TomTom/etc will not be compatible.

Basically, if an application uses non-s60-standard GUI components and/or relies upon keyboard entry then it probably won't work. GPS apps will probably fall into this category.
So unless a new version is released by TomTom/Garmin/etc then I wouldn't hold my hopes up!
I just hope that the new S60 touch UI gives TomTom a kick up the proverbial, and they decide to release something new for it 😉 (i'm thinking I might end up with a 2nd-gen, higher-range S60 touch device later next year; i'm not going to be an S60v5 early adopter!)
Depends if you want touch screen or not.
IMHO
5800 XM = N85 > N96
I think I'll get the N85 free on contract and get the 5800 XM SIM free. Cheaper this way... 😉
The 5800 is delayed until next year in many parts of Europe including the UK.
So, first things first, when the 5800 Tube is going to arrive? On October 5th it will kick off in Russia and several other markets; however the rest of Europe won't see it until early 2009 solely because Nokia don't want to tear up their own portfolio before the Christmas season.

As for Garmin I think it's just a matter of time before they release an update to fully support FP2 devices and even the 5800 XM if there is enough demand. I can't see Gamin abandoning support since the user base for FP2 will be huge...
As for TomTom well that's a different story. They have already stopped development and support for Symbian devices since v6.
n85 is the way to go...if you like touch screen then wait for the tube to be released
I'd get the N96 for its video playback capabilities
Garmin already supports FP2 devices.
However, no software will work on the 5800 unless its rewritten. So, for satnav that means you are restricted to Nokia Maps (ugh) until Garmin etc release updates, or possibly new versions altogether.
Garmin are usually quick with updates, so perhaps it wont be too long.
