E71: New questions

OK, so I just got my E71-2 yesterday and I've been using it nonstop since I loaded it up. I just have a few questions about the actual phone as well as some 3rd party apps that I hope someone will be able to help me with.

For starters, when browsing the web (using the original web browser) is it possible to close individual windows you are no longer viewing? or do you have to keep them all open until you close down the entire program? Also, would a web browser app be more versatile? such as Opera or the up and coming Skyfire browser.

Also, I use the built in e-mail connect/notification included with the phone. When I receive new e-mails, it tells me by sending an unreadable txt message to my cellphone. Is there anyway to get a notification without the annoying txts?

The third thing I noticed was that when using the GPS location feature (of both Nokia Maps as well as Google Maps) They always locate me about 2 or 3 blocks from my current position. Is this common? Is there something wrong with my GPS? I realize they both say accurate within so many yards of my position, but if I am to use my phone for navigation of any kind it is rather annoying for it to always be off by a few blocks. Is there any way to fix this with a different GPS app or a configuration I am not seeing.

Another question about the web browser. This may just be an issue with the default browser as I have yet to try any 3rd party web browsers, but I tend to enjoy using Youtube on my phone. I was always able to view videos on Youtube Mobile or the desktop site on my old phone, but for some reason the E71 won't let me. The loading time for the desktop site is way too long on the 3G network, so it is pointless for me to even try watching videos on that site. And when I tried going on the Youtube Mobile site it switches the videos over to the Real Player, which is a nice feature, but then it says unable to connect and has me download some file to the video clips folder. Even after downloading the file, it still will not connect the video with Real Player. Again, is there a setting I am not finding? or is this just another thing that the default browser has a hard time with?

This next question has to do with the Slick messaging app. I just installed the latest version and it works beautifully most of the time. But on a few occasions, it tells me that some of my AIM contacts are offline as soon as I try to IM them, when it reality they are online. I can still converse with them, however if I close the IM window, the only way for me to get the conversation back is to open another IM window through someone else on my buddy list, or to scroll through my long list of offline contacts. Is this a glitch in the Slick program or is there some setting or configuration I am not noticing? Is there a better messaging program I can use that is free or relatively cheap?

My last question is just a very simple one. Which is better, saving apps the phone memory or the memory card? I assume that saving to the memory card makes more sense because there is only so much internal memory on the phone. However I have seen people on these forums saying that saving all apps to the phone allows the apps to run faster and smoother with less problems. Which do you feel is better? Do you save your apps to the phone memory? or to your memory card?

Any answers to any of these questions would be a HUGE help. I'm LOVING my new E71 and despite these trivial matters I am a huge fan. Although everything can always be improved upon. Hopefully I can improve upon some of these issues with your help and knowledge. Thanks in advance, I'll try to keep checking back to see if anyone has responded.

About the GPS, the same happened to me...

About Youtube you could use emTube, that works great for me and allows to save the videos on the memory card.

Hey, thanks for the response, i will definitely look into the myspace app...i'm also curious now about how to uninstall and delete files i've downloaded. Recently I downloaded two themes to my phone and after installing them decided I didnt want one of them, but I can't find the files anywhere on the regular file manager. Likewise there is no delete or remove feature in the themes folder options. Is my only choice to get a file manager like FExplorer or YBrowser to find and delete these files?

1. You will find the Themes in Application Manager not the File Manager.
2. For Messaging there is Nimbuzz application. Its free and very easy to set.
3. To close the window on the browser press Option>Windows>Change and by pressing right or left go to the window and close it.
4. Am Using E90 Communicator Opera isnt compatible for me and SkyFire work only on US i guess so am stucked to the bulit in browser but i know that Opera is more advanced and can download any file while SkyFire let u render the web pages just like PC.
5. Install applications depend on user..for me i install everything on Memory card exept the used theme so when i take the memory card out of the device the theme dont change to the default.
6. I think u are new for Symbian..just check Xplore file browser and Micro Weather and T9 Nav...all for free just google it.

hey, thanks for the info, but the web browser info was a little different on my E71. The only option I have under window is Block/Allow Popups. Oh well, maybe I'll try skyfire since I am in the US.

Also, I am not that much of a new user to Symbian, but I have switched to the E71 from the 9300 which was somewhat primitive compared to this, haha. Oh well, I'll catch on quick.

Thanks again!

That doesn't work with the browser on my E71. I tried the backspace button and the X button, both while browsing and while in the Back screen where you can toggle between your viewed pages...are you using the US version? That's what I have. I've heard they disabled some functions on it, so maybe that's one of them. Stupid thing to disable though, so if you have any other suggestions I'd love to hear 'em.

It was also stupid to disable holding down the J/# key yet the U/* key will still disable/enable bluetooth.

E71 has lots of static (110 MB) and dynamic RAM (128MB) phone memory. Its got 110 MB of user storage thats like having a very small memory card. My observation is apps work best on phone mem, apart from the maps themselves from Nokia Maps, the maps app still stays on phone mem. Phone mem is faster than memory cards, its not Dynamic RAM so you're NOT using up the phones running dynamic memory.

Another advantage is... if you're an audio books/music person you can quicky swap between let's say two 8/16 Gig MicroSD cards, without losing your installed apps/themes. You paid for that internal storage, might as well use it wisely!

SkyFire works fine outside the U.S., just give 'em any "friend's" U.S. number and they'll email you the download details. Just the email and password needs to be valid, the Skyfire browser will ask you for that when you start browsing. Works fine here on my E71 in the United Arab Emirates.

For the GPS connection, mine was very inaccurate until I had let the device sit still for around 20 minutes without moving it about. Oh and using the GPS radio does seem to hurt battery life!

If you have multiple windows open in the web browser, just press '5' to view open windows, choose your window by moving using the direction key, or click 'options' to close
