How to become a developer?

2 replies · 2,046 views · Started 11 October 2008

Hello,
I have an idea for a program which I'd like to write for my E51, and any other compatible S60 phone. However, I have no idea where to start.

  • What are my language options?
  • Is there an S60 emulator/simulator for desktop platforms?
  • Do I still have to register with Nokia now that S60 is open source?
  • If so, do I have to pay Nokia?
  • Is it possible to obtain an SDK without registering?

Thanks for reading.

C++ Java or Python are the main options you have.

The S60 emulator and other tools you can get from http://forum.nokia.com but see also http://developer.symbian.com

S60 and Symbian are not yet open source. They will be by mid-2010 through the Symbian Foundation. http://www.symbianfoundation.org

The SDKs are free now, an for C++ development so is the Carbide.c++ Express version. The Java and Python development tools are also free.

You can download the tools and SDKs from Forum Nokia without registering.
