Problems with Garmin XT on N78

Hi,

I'm trying to install Garmin XT onto my N78 - it seems to install fine (no error messages at least), but when I try to run it from Applications -> GMobileXT it makes the usual 'beep' sound when launching an application, but then does nothing.

For example, I can't navigate through the menus any more - some still respond but to get full functionality back I have to turn the phone off and back on again.

Any suggestions on how to get this working please? It's a fantastic piece of software and I'd love to have it on my phone.

Many thanks

Many thanks for the prompt reply - just tried following the instructions, and once you take away the CURRENT.GPX stuff (I assume this is for upgrades only?) I think it was mostly the same as what I did before, still no joy unfortunately.

Tried a 100% clean install too... still no luck unfortunately, just seems to hang up 😞

Just went...

Applications -> Applications Manager -> Installed Applications - Garmin XT

Then uninstall, which seemed to work fine, then...

Tools -> File Manager -> Memory Card -> Garmin -> Apps -> Symbian -> RES

And installed GarminMobileXT.sis

... seemed to install fine, but again, when I go to Apps -> GMobileXT it crashes 😞

Thats odd, its working on my 6220C (also FP2).

Are you sure you are using the right sis file? Could be an old one.

Plug your phone in to a PC in data transfer mode.

Search the memory card for .sis files.

Cut any out and put them somewhere on the PC.

Reinstall the app update from garmin - this places the new sis file on the phone.

Install Garmin. The sis you use then will definatly be the right one.

Obviously, uninstall again first.

Thanks again for the reply - I've actually tried removing my entire 'Garmin' folder a few times now and starting again, each time with no luck.

I'm really confused by it to be honest... the phone is brand new, as in, I haven't installed any updates (I checked the firmware and it said there aren't any updates, for example) so could that be the problem? Do I need to install something before Garmin?

Ah, confused as hell...

Uninstalled as per above (under Installed apps.)

Removed the Garmin Folder

Removed all files from the card with the .SIS extension

Re-installed from the link you gave me

Unplugged memory card... checked My applications

Opened the file that was in there, crashed.

Checked the folder on the memory card, there were no SIS files and a load of other stuff missing too.
😞

This is really rather depressing, I cannot understand at all why it wouldn't work, I'm trying everything I can think of, yet am clearly missing something quite obvious otherwise it'd be working fine right now 😞

Not sure what else to try. I know you need the garmin folder left though. The update doesnt install all you need to run it.

Oh, I see - I'm actually trying to do a full install, so I guess that'd explain why I didn't have an awful lot of luck when I removed my original files and tried to install the update! 😊

Will have one final go in a bit, but I am at a bit of a loss with it.

Thanks again

Sorry to keep on, but I'm really confused about this, seem to be getting no where yet think that maybe one of these could be related...

Once I've installed the software on the PC (which transfers everything) Garmin XT is already in the Installed apps section - does that mean I don't have to install manually?

Are there any files I should try deleting other than the .SIS files and the Garmin Folder (if indeed I even have to delete that)

What would cause it to lock up the menu when I try to load it? I'm assuming GMobileXT is the place I need to load it from?

Are there any other files or updates I could at least try for my N78?
Thanks again, and apologies if I'm starting to get annoying :s:

1. Not sure tbh. But worth uninstalling *before* you install the update via the PC.

2. Not that I know of. You shouldn't have to delete the garmin folder (as its needed!).

3. I dont know, but I had exactly the same problem with older versions of Garmin on my 6220 - it locked up, and you couldnt move around the menus.

4. Dont think so. I cannot remember if .80 supported FP devices.

I would do this:

Uninstall any garmin app on the phone.

Move across the garmin directory from whatever source you get it from (I assume you had a backup after you deleted the folder).

Check for .sis files, and get rid.

Plug into the PC, and install the update.

Now, run the garmin sis which will have appeared.

Cross fingers!

If that doesnt work, Im stumped.

Once again, thank you so much for the reply and advice.

You know I said I'd be doing something really stupid to stop it from working? Well I think I've just worked out what it is 😊

You must have a previous version of the XT software installed on your SD card to have all of the help files, voice files and basemap files. These are not included with this update.

I seemed to somehow completely disregard this line - the version I have at the moment is 4.10.xx which certainly would explain why it's crashing and not working, d'oh!

I'm guessing I can install the 4.10.xx software, and then transfer the files using the link you gave me onto the phone, uninstall the 4.10.xx and then re-install using the same .SIS file?

Many thanks once again

Thats why I said about getting the files from a backup once you said you deleted the garmin folder.

The update installs a lot of files you need, but not all of them (after all, if it did everyone would get Garmin for free).

So...

Install whatever version you have, and make sure its working (with the maps etc).

Uninstall that version, but otherwise leave all files on there.

Connect to PC and install the update.

Install on the phone.

Ah dude, you're an absolute star, will give this a try as soon as I get home tonight 😊

Cheers

No worries. Hope it works this time (I dont see why it wouldnt).

If it still doesnt work, you could hard reset the phone, though thats a rather drastic approach.

Got it working now! Thanks bart!

Having some trouble with GPS detection for some reason, it can't find it at all... I'm assuming the N78 has GPS? The specs etc seem to imply that it does.

That would most likely be due to you copying it from another card. If it cannot find the receiver at all, you need to fiddle about with stuff I cant tell you on here.

However, you could try:

Tools - settings - system - 1st option (might be called remote GPS).

It should say in there what your options are. If a second one is not available, which should say 'Use attached/built in GPS' then you need to do other stuff.

Thanks again, just went to where you said (tried this a few times earlier-- no joy! :/) and it doesn't have the second option which you mention, and no worries at all if it's... well... I'll go and take a good look on the internets and hope I can come up with some of this other stuff, cheers 😊
