The magic question... we all know AT&T has been raking in cash with its selling the iPhone with their 3G network.
Every customer rep tells me their 3G network is UMTS, and the P990i's 3G network is UMTS. Does anyone here been able to connect to AT&T's 3G network in the U.S. with the P990i?
Someone PLEASE answer, as I'll be away from my usual internet connection from home and want to use the 3G network as a substitute.
the responses around here.
Did some digging, here are some answers in my area (Puerto Rico, which operates under the same networks in the U.S.)
1 - AT&T (formerly Cingular) will recognize the P990i without any problems, but will not work with the 3G network. It can connect to the internet just fine via GPRS, but no 3G.
2 - T-Mobile (formerly Suncom) will also recognize the P990i, though I do not know if it can connect to the internet.
These two networks are recognizable using the "select networks" option in the phone.
3 - Claro (formerly Centennial) will not recognize the P990i.
4 - Sprint - have not been able to try it out.
The Sony Ericsson P990i works on the UMTS/GSM 900/1800/1900 frequencies, but the 3G network in the U.S. is "underdeveloped" compared to the rest of the world. Devotees of the P990i report instant 3G network access in Europe, but I have not heard of any P990i user with 3G access in the U.S.
Has anyone had a different experience?
