I'm one of the former Windows Mobile users who has made the shock return to Nokia thanks to the e71. Just want to post a few initial thoughts on pros and cons after 3 weeks with the device. Any advice to overcome the cons is of course appreciated 😊
PROS:
1. Battery life. Phenomenal. Anyone coming from a 2G phone might not get what the fuss is about, but just about every 3G device out there dies after less than a day's decent usage. My HTC Hermes would give me less than 6 hours by the end. The e71 just keeps going. 2 days with heavy wifi, surfing, GPS, music player, email polling is very impressive.
2. Form factor. Robustly built, smart to look at. The only device I've known yet that can really do one-handed QWERTY effectively.
3. All-round functionality. Few devices can give me GPS, music player, FM Radio, browser and email as well and as cheaply as the e71.
4. Widsets. Very nice!
5. Podcasting. I never listened to a single podcast on my HTC Hermes. The e71 makes it so easy to set up.
CONS:
1. No HTML email. After coming from Pocket Outlook, this is a real annoyance. I've tried the Nokia Email Beta, the Gmail client and the Email on 3 client as well as the built-in client and none come close to Outlook on WinMo. Is there anything out there for S60? I'd be quite happy to pay good whack for a decent email client.
2. Predictive text - you either have this off (which is no good) or on, and get predictive text but for a T9 device! If I've typed "home" on a QWERTY keyboard, I don't want the text to default to "good"!! Am I missing something here? Presumably this is a legacy of the e71 being sister to the e66. But it's very annoying!
3. Music player is quiet. I've got round this by copying my entire mp3 library and increasing volume on tracks using mp3gain. Would rather not have to have done this though obviously!
4. Navigation - too many clicks needed to do simple things. I'm aware I'm coming from a touchscreen world, but S60 really does demand many presses when one used to do. Can't see much I can do about this however.
5. Clunkiness of Symbian. I have 1300 music tracks on my e71. When I want to select a ringtone, why do I have to manually scroll through all 1300 before finding the tone I want - or worse, to simply select "No tone"? Aaaargggh!!
All said, still impressed with the device. Speed of performance and battery life are very good indeed. And I haven't started scratching the world of Symbian freeware. Although if anyone can find me a decent Scrabble game (if only they'd port Xwords over!) I'd be eternally grateful. 😉
